古文研究法105-1 日本永代蔵より：其の年明けて夏になり、東寺あたりの里人、茄子(なすび)の初生(はつなり)を目籠(めかご)に入れて売り来るを、七十五日の齢(よはひ)、これ楽しみの、ひとつは弐文(にもん)・ふたつは三文(さんもん)に値段を定め、いづれかふたつ取らぬ人はなし。藤市(←人名)は、ひとつを弐文に買ひて言へるは「今一文で盛りなる時は大きなるがあり」と、心を付くる程の事あしからず。
その年が明けてやがて夏になり東寺あたりの百姓がナスビの初物を目籠に入れて売りに来る。初物を食べると75日だけ長生きすると言われているので、このナスを食べるのが楽しみのひとつなのだ。ナス1個を二文・2個を三文と言って値段を付けて売る。すると誰だってふたつ買わない者はない。ところが藤市はナス1個を買った、そうして言うことには「旬の頃になると、もう1文よけいに出すと大きなやつがある」という次第で、こいつの気配りにはそつがない。
N君：普通は売り手がセレクトした2個セットを3文で買って、買い手は満足します。何故なら1個2文だから。ただし1個だけ買う時は買い手に選択権があるのです。そこで藤市はあえて(1個2文)×2＝2個4文 で買い、大きなナスを自分でセレクトする、という話です。その結果、買い手は2個3文よりも2個4文のほうが得になる、というのです。井原西鶴先生の着眼点はスゴイですね。こういうことは我々が令和の現代に、物を買ったりローンを組んだりする時に考えておかなければならないこと、だと思いました。
The New Year comes and then summer seems to be just around the corner. Farmers living near Tou Temple come to sell early eggplants looking delicious in baskets made of bamboo. I look forward to buying and eating them because a proverb says that a man who ate the first product of the season gets an extra life of 75 days. They bid 2 mons for an eggplant and 3 mons for two. Therefore everyone buys two. Touichi, however, bought one at 2 mons and said proudly, "You had better wait for the height of summer, and you can get a bigger one if you pay an additional coin." I am deeply impressed by his prudence.
S先生：ウン、とても良いです。最近はN君も腕を上げてきたせいか、あまり言うこともなくなってきましたね。特に第1文の summer seems to be just around the corner.「夏がすぐそこまできているらしい」はこなれた表現で素晴らしい。小言も少しあります。第3文の中の格言 a man who ate the first product of the season gets an extra life of 75 days. は過去と現在の時制が混在していていけません。ate を eats に改めましょう。第4文以降に現れるお金の単位「～文(もん)」を mons としたのは誤りでした。たとえば 100円を 100 yens とは言いません、100 yen ですね。同様にここも mons ではなくて mon にして下さい。一般に日本語をそのまま英語として用いる場合は単複同型です。

They sell one eggplant for two mon and two for three. Naturally, there is no one but buys two. Toichi, who dared to buy one for two mon, said pretentiously, "Two mon will give me a much larger eggplant when it is at its best." How smart enough he is to make a living !
