古文研究法17-1 源氏物語橋姫：あまたへ通ふべかめる透垣(すいがい)の戸を少し押し開けて見給へば、月をかしきほどに霧(き)り渡れるを眺めて、簾を短く巻き上げて人々ゐたり。内なる人、一人(大君＝長女)は柱に少し居隠れて琵琶を前に置きて撥(ばち)を手まさぐりにしつつ居たるに、雲隠れたりつる月のにはかにあかく差し出でたれば「扇ならでこれにても月は招きつべかりけり」とて、さしのぞきたる顔、いみじうらうたげに匂(にほ)ひやかなるべし。
あちこちへ通じるようになっている透垣の戸を源氏の君が少し押し開けて屋敷の方を御覧になると、中では人々が、月が趣深くけぶっているのを眺めながら簾を低く巻き上げて座っていた。そのうちの一人(大君＝長女)は柱に少し隠れるような具合に座って琵琶を前に置き撥を手でもてあそんでいた。すると雲に隠れていた月が急に明るく出てきたので彼女は「扇じゃなくてもこの撥できっと月を呼び出せるわ」と言って、ちらっとその顔がこちらへ見えた、その顔はたいそう可愛らしく美しく見えた。
N君：美しい姉妹が月を眺めながら語り合っている様子を源氏が物陰から覗き見している場面です。透垣は「竹や板で作った垣根」の意で「すいがい」という読みも大切です。主格を表す「の」がまた出ました。助動詞「つ」に助動詞「べし」が加わって「つべし」になると普通の推量よりも意味が強くなって「きっと～にちがいない」みたいな意味になります。「強意の”つべし”」と覚えます。形容詞「らうたし」は英語では lovely「可愛らしい」の意です。
Opening slightly the small door installed on the hedge, and looking in the garden, Genji found that two young women were sitting under the eave with the reed screen wound up a little and appreciating the beautiful moon shrouded in a mist. One of them, the elder, sitting behind the pillar, was not seen very clearly but seemed to play with the pick of a biwa(japanese harp) with her fingers. Noticing that the bright moon emerged suddenly from behind the clouds, she said, "I will be able to call back the moon without fail by this pick even if I cannot use a fan." Her face, which Genji glimpsed when she made the witty remark, looked very pretty and elegant.
S先生：構成は良いですが細かいことが何か所かあります。第1文の付帯状況 with the reed screen wound up a little に使われた wind up は「ぜんまい式の時計を巻く」の意なので、簾を巻き上げる時には wind up ではなくて roll up のほうが合っています。よってここは with the reed screen rolled up a little にしましょう。第1文、第3文に出た月は確かに the moon なのですが形容詞が付くと定冠詞が不定冠詞に変わります。したがって第1文では a beautiful moon、第3文では a bright moon となります。このほかにも a full moon, a new moon, a haif moon などの例もあります。a full moon なのに the sitting sun、これが英語の分からぬ所です。面倒ですが慣れていきましょう。
Pushing open a bamboo door with chinks leading to someplaces to look in the premises, Lord Genji found two ladies sitting under the eaves with a bamboo blind rolled up and looking up at a dreamy moon shrouded in a fog. One of them, the older, was fingering the plectrum of a biwa in front of her, hiding herself behind a pillar. Then a cloud-covered moon suddenly began to shine clearly. The older lady said, "I can tell the moon to come and show herself by playing the biwa with this plectrum. I don't have to use a fan." Glancing at her face, Lord Genji found that she was so sweat and beautiful.
N君：chink＝crack「隙間、割れ目」、premise「境内、構内」。S先生の第1文に出て来た to look という不定詞は、目的の不定詞とも取れるし結果の不定詞とも取れますね。
S先生：中学の時に習った不定詞の分類からそろそろ卒業して and looking みたいな捉え方をする頃ですね。不定詞にすることで文を締める、という感覚です。
