古文研究法25-1 更級日記：その山越え果てて贄野(にへの)の池のほとりに行き着きたるほど、日は山の端(は)にかかりたり。「今は宿とれ」とて人々(筆者の従者たち)あかれて宿求むる。「所端(はした)にていとあやしげなる下司(げす)の小家なむある」と言ふに「いかがはせむ」とてそこに宿りぬ。皆人(小家の家族)京にまかりぬとてあやしの男ふたりぞ居たる。その夜もいも寝ず。
その山を越えてしまって贄野の池のあたりに行き着いた頃、陽は山の端に入りかけていた。「こうなったらここらに泊まろう」ということになり従者たちが手分けして宿を捜す。「ここは場所が中途半端なのでとても粗末な下人の小屋があるだけです」と従者が言うので、私は「しょうがないわねえ」と言ってそこに泊まった。家の者は皆京へ参ったので、というわけで下っ端の下男二人だけが居た。その晩も眠れなかった。
N君：紫式部「源氏物語」に憧れる文学少女菅原孝標女(すがわらたかすえのむすめ)が念願かなって京へ上る途中の紀行日記文です。国司の娘である彼女の目には、一般の人々の生活ぶりがもの珍しく映っています。形容詞「あやし」は現代語であれば、怪しい・妖しい、のような意味ですが、昔は「粗末な、卑しい」のような意でした。
Crossing beyond the hill and arriving at the edge of the Nieno pond, we founf the sun to be the very verge of falling behind the mountain. We could not help accepting the idea that tonight we should stay around here. Therefore my subordinates split up to search for a house which can serve as a hotel. One of them said, "All we could find was a mean hut because this place is halfway through towns." "We may have no option but to accept it," I replied and stayed there that night. We heard from two male servants of the house that the owner and his family had gone out for Kyoto. It was also hard for me to sleep sound that night.
S先生：構成は良いのですが堅苦しい表現がアチコチに見られます。第1文の on the very verge of ～ は「～の瀬戸際にあって」のような意味と思いますがいかにも大仰ですので除外しましょう。それから「陽が落ちる」は fall ではなくて set 、また、mountain といえば一つの山ですが、ここでは「山並み」くらいの意味ですから mountains が良いでしょう。結局この部分は we found the sun setting behind the mountains とするのがスッキリして良いでしょう。第2文も accepting the idea that tonight we should stay around here のところが堅苦しいので、大幅に短縮して staying around there that night に変えて下さい。第3文も a house which can serve as a hotel のところが堅苦しくて説明的過ぎます。ここは一言 a tavern「居酒屋、旅籠」で済ませましょう。たしかトルコ語に taverna「宿屋」という単語があってそこから来ている単語だったと思います。「食べるな」＝「宿屋」というのが面白くて私の記憶に残っていました。第4文も because this place is halfway through towns という表現が欧米人に理解されるかどうか自信がありません。ここは because this is a remote place とするほうが理解され易いと思います。それよりもこの because 節がいかにも堅苦しくていけません。ここは Since this is a remote place, all we could find was a mean hut. とするのがスッキリして良いでしょう。肩の力を抜いて「くだけていて簡潔で理解されやすい表現」を追求して下さい。
The sun was setting behind the mountains when we went over the hill and arrived at a pond called 'Nieno.' We had no choice but to stay there. My attendants separated into groups to go in search of a tavern. One of them said, "This is a remote place and there is nothing but a shabby hut here." Saying that it couldn't be helped, I decided to stay there. All of the family having gone to Kyoto, there were only two petty servants left. To my regret, I couldn't sleep well that night, either.

S先生：「今夜も寝付けなかった」のように否定文では too の代わりに either を使います。辞書を引いて確かめておいて下さい。
