帚木201・202・203：(左馬頭の言葉続き)歌詠むと思へる人の、やがて歌にまつはれ、をかしき故事をも初めよりとりこみつつ、すさまじきをりをり、よもかけたるこそ、ものしき事なれ。返しせねば情なし。えせざらむ人は、はしたなからむ。
そうかと思うと和歌の得意な女ってのがある。その得意の歌詠み方面を鼻にかけましてね、なんでもかんでも和歌、和歌、和歌だ。それでなにやらオツな古詩なんぞを頭から引用したりして、こっちとしては鼻白むようなとんでもない時に、うやうやしく歌を詠みかけてきたりする。そういうのは実に鬱陶しい。即座に返歌をしなければこっちが唐変木ということになるし、器用に返歌できない者にとっては迷惑至極です。
N君：左馬頭という男はよくしゃべります。
Instead of Chinese literature, some women are good at composing Japanese poems. Proud of their talent to make beautiful poems, they refer to poems in any occasion. Sometimes they quote the begining of a chic old poem. Futhermore, they tend to send me a fashionable poem when I never feel sympathy for her. How annoying ! To make matters worse, I will be taken as a blockhead unless I return an answer poem right away. This kind of women is nothing but a nuisance for men who don't have a skill to return a prompt answer.
S先生：今回はだいたいOKです。第3文の the begining of ですがあまりに直接的なので、the first line of くらいでどうでしょうか。第4文の fashionable poem は少し違和感があります。やはり fashionable は服装の形容詞ですから、ここでは refined poem くらいが良いと思います。
On the other hand, there are ladies who pride themselves on their ability to compose waka. They express in waka whatever they see and feel. Quoting the first line of a smart old poem, they often send us an ostentatious one when we feel bored and disgusted. If we don't reply at once, they will think that we are not smart. They are quite nuisances to men who are not so good at writing poems.
N君：ostentation「見栄を張る事、虚飾」で、vanity, conceit 「虚栄心」なども似た意味の単語です。研究社の辞書には、The statue had beauty without ostentation.「その像にはてらいのない美しさがあった」という例文が出ていました。”てらい”というのは「これ見よがしのわざとらしさ」という意味のようです。英語を勉強していると、現代文の勉強にもなりますね。
S先生：そうですね。英作文の勉強をしているつもりが、いつのまにやら、古典・現代文・日英の文法、さらには歴史などへとウイングが広がっていきます。これこそが勉強の醍醐味なのです。ちなみに醍醐はチーズの意ですし、醍醐天皇はどんな人だったか、なんて調べていたら、どこまでも翼が広がっていきます。
