帚木20・21：(中将の言葉続き) 我が心得たる事ばかりを、おのがじし心をやりて人をばおとしめなど、かたはらいたきこと多かり。親など立ち添ひもてあがめておひさきこもれる窓のうちなるほどは、ただかたかどを聞き伝えて心を動かすこともあめり。
自分の得意技だけはそれぞれすっかり一人前のつもりで、人のことは下手くそだのなんのと平気で悪口を言う、全く笑止千万ですよ。だいたいね、箱入り娘で親どもが年中付いて回って一生懸命扶育する、そうして深窓の令嬢として将来を期待されるなんてうちは、なにしろ誰も実体を知らないわけですからね、なにやらちょっとばかりできるという程度の技芸を噂に聞いて男どもが心を動かすということがあるのでしょうね。
N君：Each of them is apt to regard herself as an independent master in the field of her favorite subject and make an ill remark on other's works. How stupid they are ! To begin with, I would like to say that nobody can see her virtual figure because her parents have spent all their time on bringing up their lovely daughter with great care and expected her splendid future as a girl nurtured in a good family. Under her parent's powerful guard to their daughter, men may be misled by the uncertain rumor that she is good at some art, though it does not deserve their attention.
S先生：やや持って回った表現がありますが概ね良いでしょう。ただ1か所、第3文の her virtual figure について一言あります。形容詞 virtual は「実質上の、事実上の」の意なのでN君の使い方は正しい。しかし figure は「外見上の姿」の意ですから、N君の作文は「誰も彼女の本当の外見を知らない」となってしまう。原文の意味するところは「内面も含めて彼女の本当の姿をだれも知らない」だから、her virtual figure を what she really is に変えてみましょう。こうすることでスッと入ってきます。「誰も昔の私を知らない」を、Nobody knows my figure in old days. と言うよりも、Nobody knows what I used to be. と言ったほうが意味を充分伝えていますよね。第4文の misled は mislead の過去分詞形ですね。
They think that they are superior to anyone in their art and speak ill of others shamelessly. What a laugh that they should brag like that ! They are girls brought up with tender care by their parents. Though they may be expected to be promising in the future, no one knows what they really are. There may be some men who are excited to hear that a certain lady is good at some art.
N君：知らなかった単語を調べました。brag は「自慢して大袈裟に言いたてる」の意で boast よりも鼻持ちならぬ感じが強い、とのことでした。promising は形容詞で「将来有望な、見込みのある」の意。限定的・叙述的双方の用法があって、大修館の辞書には、a promising new player「有望な新人選手」、Tomorrow's weather is promising.「天気は良くなりそう」が出ていました。今回の僕の作文の終わりのほうに deserve one's attention が出ました。前回第279回のS先生の作文の終わりの方にも be worth+動名詞 が出ました。第276回にこの形が検討されてから流行りのようになっています。無意識のうちに響き合っているのでしょうか。
S先生：そういうことでしょう。be worth+名詞 と deserve とが記憶されやすいので良い勉強になると思います。
