桐壺30：御使ひの行きかふほどもなきに、なほいぶせさを限りなくのたまはせつるを、(更衣家人)「夜中うち過ぎるほどになむ、絶えはて給ひぬる」とて泣きさわげば、御使いもいとあへなくて帰り参りぬ。
帝は桐壺更衣の安否を心配して気が気でないとおっしゃっておられたが、帝が更衣宅へ出した使者が行ったり来たりする間もなく、更衣の家人が「夜中過ぎに亡くなりました」と泣き騒いだので、使者もそれを見てがっかりして帝のもとへ帰ってきた。
