古文研究法149-6 今昔物語より：今は昔、愛宕(あたご)の山に久しく行なふ持経者の聖人(しゃうにん)ありけり。年来、法華経を持(たも)ち奉りて他の念なくして、坊の外に出づることなかりけり。
昔々、愛宕山に長年修行して経文を大切にする和尚がいた。数年このかた法華経を大切にしており、他の事を考えないで、住まいの外へ出ることはなかった。
N君：「坊」は「家、住まい」の意味です。宿坊の坊でしょう。
Once upon a time, there was a priest who had lived and trained himself in Mt. Atago for long years. Valuing sutras very much, he thought the sutra of Hokke more precious than any other thing. Staying at home and never going out of his hut, he thought of nothing but the sutra.
S先生：第2文冒頭の分詞構文は譲歩「お経を大事にしていたのだが」の意味でしょうね。第2文末の any other thing はちょっとどうでしょうか。「他のどの経典よりも」と言っているのであり、前半の sutra を one で受けて any other one とするのが良いと思います。
Once upon a time, there lived a priest who had practiced Buddhist austerities in Mt. Atago for a long time. He treasured sutras. Above all, he recited Lotus Sutra more earnestly without thinking of any other thing and going out of his temple.
N君：僕が there was a priest who ～ と作文していたところを、先生は第1文で there lived a priest who ～ と書いています。これはどう違うのですか？
S先生：意味としてはほとんど同じですが there lived のほうが自然な感じがします。
