古文研究法57-1 枕草子：思はむ子を法師になしたらむこそ心苦しけれ。ただ木の端(は)などのやうに思ひたるこそ、いと愛(いと)ほしけれ。精進物(さうじもの)のいと悪(あ)しきをうち食ひ寝(い)ぬるをも。若きはものもゆかしからむ。女などのあるところをも、などか忌(い)みたるやうにさしのぞかずもあらなむ。それをも安からず言ふ。
可愛いと思う子があるとしてその子を坊さんにするとしたらそれこそ気の毒なことだ。坊さんが自身のことを木石のように思っているのは可哀そうだ。彼らが粗末な精進料理を食べそのまま(何の楽しみもなく)寝てしまうのも可哀そう。坊さんとはいえ若いうちはものを見たり聞いたりしたかろう。女なんかの居る所も、どうして禁物みたいに覗き見もしないでいられようか。それさえ世間の人はいけないことのように言う。
N君：修行者に対する世間の厳しい眼に対して清少納言が反論しています。同じ人間なのだからもう少し大目に見ようよ、と主張しています。推量助動詞「む」の意味は広くて、本文は仮定婉曲を表す「む」の例文として広く知られている部分です。「～だとしたら」の意味です。「心苦し」は「気の毒」の意。「ゆかし」は「見たい聞きたい触りたい」の意で、be interested in ～ に似ています。「などか忌みたるやうにさしのぞかずもあらなむ」はこのまま暗記してしまうほどの価値ある言い方で、反語や、未然形＋誂え終助詞 が盛り込まれています。最後の「それをも安からず言ふ」の主語が「世間の人々」であったとは驚きであり、このあたりの読解力が大問題です。
If you have a child whom you think a promising boy, and if you have to make him a priest, I feel pity for you. Moreover I feel very sorry for a young priest who considers himself to be an insensible creature like a stone. Especially it is a pity that he always has a mean vesitarian dish and he merely goes to bed without any pastime. Even if he engages in a religious vocation, he will be interested in this and that in his youth. For example, never can he put up with peeping into the place where women gather. Nevertheless people are apt to criticize him for this trivial diversion.
S先生：今回は上出来です。細かい所は抜きにして、全体的にスッキリしていて読みやすいです。第5文の never can he put up with peeping ～ には少々問題があります。put up with は動名詞を取りません。I can't put up with the noise. のように目的語は名詞です。ここは never can he but peep ～「覗かないではいられない」としてはどうでしょうか。he cannot but peep ～ の not の部分を強い否定詞 never に変えて強調した結果、助動詞も一緒になって前に飛び出して来た、と理解して下さい。
What a pity it is for you to have to make your dear son a priest ! It is to be pitied that a priest is forced to think himself as unfeeling as if he were a stone. I also feel pity for a priest who only eats vegetables and goes to bed with no pleasure at all. Even if he is a priest who should devote himself to practicing asceticims, no doubt he wants to see and hear various worldly things. How can he control his strong desire to peep at the room where women gather and chatter ? It is regrettable that people blame him for such trifles.
N君：asceticims「禁欲主義」は、世間の些事に惑わされることなく修行に打ち込むことを意味しています。
S先生：その通り。年寄りならいざ知らず、若い人がそういう苦行を強いられることは無理だし可哀そう、と清少納言さんは言っているわけですね。正しいと思います。
