古文研究法57-2 枕草子：まいて験者(げんざ)などはいと苦しげなめり。困(こう)じて睡(ねぶ)れば「睡りをのみして」などもどかる。いとところせく、いかにおぼゆらむ。
普通の坊さんでさえこれほど窮屈なのに、まして修験者などはたいそう苦しげに見える。くたびれて居眠りをすると「居眠りばかりしてけしからん」などと文句を言われる。言われた当人は立つ瀬がなく、どんな気持ちがするだろうか。
N君：「困ず」は「くたびれる」で be tired with ～ のような意味です。「もどかる」は「文句を言われる」の意。「所狭し」は「窮屈で気詰まり」の状態を言います。今日のところは結構分かりやすかったですが「もどかる」は全く知りませんでした。
It is hard for even an ordinary priest to lead an uneventful life, and all the more so for an ascetic monk. The latter seems to spend more trying days than the former. If he got tired from much work and fell asleep in spite of himself, he would be blamed for his slight fault. People will speak ill of him behind his back. How miserable he feels at the abuse which puts him in an awkward position !
S先生：全体の構成はスッキリしていてとても良いのですが、語法的に言っておかなければならないことが複数あります。第1文の all the more＋形容詞＋for ～ は「～のためにかえって、、、」の意味ですからここでは不適切です。ここは much more so for an ascetic monk というふうに変えましょう。例文を示します。I like him for his diligence, much more for his honesty.「勤勉だから好きだがそれにもまして正直だから好き」。much の代わりに still を使っても良いです。He can't speak English, much less German.「英語を話せない、ましてやドイツ語は話せない」。much の代わりに still を使っても良いです。all the more でよく出てくる例文が She is shy but I love her all the more. とか I love her all the more for her shyness. のようなものなので、これはもう理屈抜きで覚えて欲しいです。第3文は仮定法過去の文章になっていますが「修行僧が居眠りをする」というのは実際にありうることですから、ここは仮定法ではなくて普通の条件文を使うのが正しいでしょう。ゆえに got, fell, would をそれぞれ gets, falls, will に直しましょう。第4文の「陰口をたたく」は大事な言い方でここでは適切に使うことができました。例文を示しておきます。Don’t speak ill of others behind their backs.
Even an ordinary priest is compelled to lead such a strict life. How much harder an ascetic Buddhist should train himself ! If he gets so tired that he falls into a doze, he will be severely criticized for it. He himself will be put in a fix and unable to find suitable words to excuse himself.
N君：fix「苦境」は plight や predicament に似た単語です。
S先生：そのあたりはかなりハイレベルな単語ですが、一流大学を目指すならカバーしておかなければならないでしょう。
