帚木245・246・247・248：守出で来て燈籠かけそへ、火あかくかかげなどして、御果物ばかり参れり。(源氏)「とばり帳もいかにぞは。さるかたの心もとなくては、めざましきあるじならむ」とのたまへば、(守)「なによけむ、とも、え承らず」と、かしこまりてさぶらふ。はしつかたのおましに、仮なるやうにて大殿籠れば、人々も静まりぬ。
やがて紀伊守がやってきて軒の燈籠の数を増やし、灯明台の灯を明るく掻き揚げなどして、果物を持ってきた。源氏は催馬楽(さいばら)を歌うように言った。「”とばり帳もいかにぞは、、、" とな。私の寝間の支度はできているか。”あのもうひとつのもてなし"の心配りがないと、接待はガッカリなんだが、、、」と、源氏は催馬楽の「我家(わいへ)」に「とばり帳の用意はよいか、、、蛤は良いぞ」と歌ってあるのを引き合いに出して、「女の貝」のもてなしをせよ、と匂わせたのであった。けれども紀伊守はそれに気付いたのかどうなのか、「ははっ、何がお好みかも伺っておりませんでしたので、、、」とかしこまって平伏している。源氏は邸の端近いところにしつらえた仮の御寝所に入って休み、酒を飲んでいた供人どももだんだん静かになった。
N君：平安時代の政府高官は下位の者に結構えぐいことを要求するんですね。現代の感覚からはかけ離れています。
Soon Kii-no-kami came along, increased the number of lanterns suspended from the eaves, and arranged the lamps in light stands to make them brighter. He was brisk enough to bring some fruit for Genji. Seeing his quick-witted manner, Genji said as if he were singing a song, "Have you prepared a bedroom for me ? Without an arrangement of a beautiful woman with the bed, I would never be entertained. Oh, it's a joke." Actually this was a passage from 'My Home', a song of Saibara. Genji demanded implicitly a seductive service by means of referring to the old song. But it seemed unclear whether Kii-no-kami was aware of Genji's suggestion or not. All he could do was to prostrate himself obediently, saying, "I could not prepare that thing for you because no information about your preference had not reached me、、、." Giving up his unreasonable request, Genji went into a provisional bedroom set up near the east edge of the villa. His subordinates, who were talking aloud over sake, became quiet as well.
S先生：昨日に比べればかなり良いですが、それでも何点か指摘があります。第6文の it's a joke はこれでもよいですが I'm only joking のほうが良いと思います。第8文の by means of は手段を表す時に使われるので、N君がここで使ったのは良かったのですが、by means of に続く動名詞に少し違和感を覚えます。by means of は、We express our thoughts by means of language. のように、あとには純粋な名詞を取ることが多い気がします。よって、動名詞を生かすことにして、by means of を簡潔に by のみにしてはどうでしょうか。第11文の because節の中味ですが、no information about your preference had not reached me はさすがに硬過ぎです。I had not been informed of your desire くらいでどうでしょうか。
Soon the Governor of Kii came to set more lanterns at the eaves and turn up them. He took the trouble to take some fruit. Genji said as if to sing, "Is my bedroom prepared ? If you won't entertain me with a certain thing I love most, you hardly qualify as a host. Ha-ha !" Genji quoted 'My House' from Saibara : "Are all the curtains hung ? I love a mussel." He used a word 'mussel' to hint that he should be entertained with a woman. "I am sorry I haven't heard what you want," said the Governor prostrating himself stiffly. Genji went to a temporary bedroom prepered near the end of the residence and lay down. His men, who were drinking and making merry, got quiet gradually.
N君：S先生の作文の第2文に出てきた take the trouble to do は「わざわざ～する、骨を折って～する」ですね。大修館の辞書には、She was kind enough to find homes for them. = She took the trouble to find homes for them. という例文が出ていました。mussel「ムラサキ貝」。
S先生：今日の英作談義は the way です。なかなか難儀なワードであり生徒が苦労しています。なにはともあれ the way how という具合に重ねる言い方はない、ということを確認しておこう。the way (that) I live = how I live「私の生き方」です。take the way とか make the way もありそうでないのです。take the easy way out「楽な方法を取る」、take one's way「出発する」、make way「道を譲る」、make one's way「進む、成功する」などはあります。That is the way I am.「私が存在する方法、私のありよう」というような難しい例文もあります。この am は完全自動詞と言って、それだけで成立している自動詞です。訳としては「在る、存在する」となります。She is beautiful. のような、補語を伴って初めて成立する不完全自動詞とは異なります。by the way「話はかわるが、ところで」はN君もよく知っているでしょう。今日は all the way「はるばる」を覚えましょう。Thank you for your coming all the way in the rain「足元の悪い中、はるばるお越しいただきありがとうございます」ですね。
