帚木373・374・375・376：(姉君の心中)「ほのかなりし御気配ありさまは、げになべてやは」と思ひ出で聞こえぬにはあらねど、「をかしきさまを見え奉りても何にかはなるべき」など、思ひかへすなりけり。君はおぼし怠る時の間もなく、心苦しくもおぼし出づ。思へりし気色などのいとほしさも、はるけむかたなくおぼしわたる。かろがろしくはひまぎれ立ち寄り給はむも、(源氏の心中)「一目しげからむ所に、びんなきふるまひやあらはれむ」と、「人のためもいとほしく」とおぼしわづらふ。
「それにつけてもいつかの夜、暗い灯の中でほんのりと見えた源氏様の御容姿や御様子は、ハア、本当に何とも言えず素晴らしかった」と、そんなふうに思い出さぬわけではなかったけれど、「といって、自分のほうから色好みの有様をお見せしたってどうなるものじゃないしね」などと考え直したりするのである。しかしながら源氏は一時としてこの姉君のことを忘れる暇もなく、ただ思いが通じないことを辛いとばかり思い出している。そうしてあの夜彼女が汗みずくになって懊悩していた様子などの愛おしさを、どうにも心から払いのけ難く思い続けるのであった。だからといって、「あの紀伊守邸に出入りする人達にまぎれて軽々しく立ち寄ったりするというのもまた、あの人目の多い場所柄からして、良からぬ振る舞いが露見するもとだ、そうなれば、彼女のためにも気の毒なことになるし」とあれこれ思い煩っている。
N君：「びんなし」は「都合が悪い」「けしからぬ」の意。

On the other hand, Genji has never forgotten her even for a minute. He is always thinking of her because he has failed to make himself understood by her. He could not but recall her cute look at the night when she got into a perspiration trying to push back his offer. But, what if he would drop in Kii's villa casually ? He must be conspicuous, no matter how carefully he tries to conceal himself in a number of people who are going out from and coming in the gate of the residence. In that case, many people will notice his unfaithful behavior, which will force her into a tight corner. He worried about this and that.
S先生：今日のところはほとんど言うことはないのですが、ちょっとしたことを数か所指摘させて頂きます。第5文の make himself understood by her 「彼女に自分のことを分かってもらう」はよく見る例文からそのまま取った表現ですが、ここでは素直に make her understand his feeling というふうに能動態で表すほうが自然だと思います。第6文の her cute look ですが、和訳に忠実にやるなら her cute but agonizing look とするほうが良いでしょう。同じく第6文 when節の中味 she got into a perspiration trying to push back his offer「源氏の誘いを押し戻しつつどっと汗をかいた」というような意味だと思うのですが、get into a perspiration という言い方があるのかどうか、私にはわかりません。ここは she refused his wooing in perspiration くらいにするのがスッキリして良いと思います。woo は「女を口説く」の意で court に似ています。第8文末の going out from and coming in the gate of the residence は特に問題ないのですが、しいて言えば順序が逆のほうが自然で、coming into and going out of the residence が良いでしょう。gate は不要と思います。
How she had been intoxicated to see Lord Genji sitting in the dark lamplight one night ! Ah, he was beautiful beyond description. Such a good old memory would come to her, but she thought it over that however sensually she courted him, things would not go as she pleased. Genji, however, did not forget her even a moment. He just thought it painful not to make her understand his earnest feelings for her. And remembering how she was in agony, he could not but feel pity for her. Nevertheless, it was not proper to thoughtlessly go to Kii's residence which always had many visitors, for they might suspect that he was having an unchaste relation with her. Then she would be in trouble still more. Various thoughts crossed his mind.
