帚木102・103・104：(左馬頭の言葉続き)手を書きたるにも深き事はなくて、ここかしこの点ながに走り書き、そこはかとなく気色ばめるは、うち見るにかどかどしく、気色だちたれど、なほまことのすぢをこまやかに書きえたるは、うはべの筆消えて見ゆれど、今ひとたび取り並べて見れば、なほじちになむ寄りける。はかなき事だにかくこそ侍れ。まして人の心の、時にあたりて気色(けしき)ばめらむ見る目のなさけをば、え頼むまじく思う給へ侍る。
書道だってそうです。本当の書の心得もなくて、ただあちらこちらの一点一画をスーッと長く伸ばして走り書きしたりして、なんとなく洒落たらしく書いているのは、ちょっと見にはいかにもひとかどの書き手のように見えます。しかしやっぱり正真の骨法をおろそかにせず修行した手は一見すると何の技法もないようですが、改めてかれこれを並べて見れば、どうしたってその実直な筆法のほうに心が引かれる。という具合に、かりそめの技芸のような事でもそうなのですから、まして女の心なんかはなにかの折節につけて、こううわべばかりを格好つけて見せるような表面上の風情などは、所詮信頼できないと、私などは思うばかりでございますなあ。
N君：左馬頭は長々としゃべっていますが要するに「妻にする女としての条件は、心穏やかな性格と問題処理能力の高さが最重要で、表面上の美しさはどうでもよい」と言っているようです。なかなか良いことを言ってますね。
The principle is also true of calligraphy. To write letters somehow in a quaint way by extending lightly the bar or point of a letter's stroke just seems a fashionable method even if the calligrapher does not know how to write in an authentic way. But the work by a master who is definitely subject to the right standard of calligraphic discipline, though it apparently looks like an insignificant work with no prominent technique, is even better than the work drawn by a mediocre writer. Comparing the two works at the sme time, we cannot help be attracted by the former's faithfullness. Such being the case, the essential discipline counts more than the fashionable surface even in the trivial art, and all the more so in women. The superficial charm some women are eager to bear on any occasions is not what we should rely on, I think.
S先生：だいたいよく書けているのですが3か所だけ注文があります。第2文の extending lightly the bar or point of a letter's stroke はもうちょっと簡潔にしたいのと、文字 letter はひとつではないしハネ stroke もひとつではないので複数にして、extending lightly letters' strokes にしましょう。第3文は長いけれど構成はしっかりしています。その後半に出て来た work は、繰り返しを避ける意味でも one のほうが良いでしょう。N君は「文が長いから紛れが無いようにあえて work を使った」と主張するかもしれませんね、それはそれで立派な理由です。第5文の and all the more so in women「ましてや人間の女性については外見より中身が大事だ」の意を表そうとしていることがヒシヒシと伝わって来ます。しかし all the more の後には通常 for ～ とか because ～ のような理由を示す句・節が来ます。たとえば、I love her all the more for her shyness (because she is shy).「内気なので一層好き」のように使います。ゆえにここで all the more を使おうとするのはやや無理があるので潔く諦めましょう。ではどうするか？ ヒントの例文を示します。He can speak English, much more German.「英語を話せる、ドイツ語はもっと話せる」。He cannot speak English, much less German.「英語を話せない、ドイツ語はもっと話せない」。much のところは still でも良いです。本文は「書道でも表面的な恰好良さより本質が大事、ましてや女性についてもそう」と言いたいわけですから、and all the more so in women のところを much more so in women にすると良いと思います。much は still でも良いです。ちなみにこの第5文の自動詞 count 「重きをなす」= matter は非常に大切な単語なので、辞書を引いて例文を書き抜いておいて下さい。N君はこの第5文で count を正しく使うことができているので「おぬしなかなかやるな」という感じを受けました。
The same thing can be said about calligraphy. A man without any skill stretches out this line and that somewhat elegantly. At first sight he looks like a master calligrapher, while a man who has mastered calligraphy according to the principles may seem to have no skill at all. But if you compare the two calligraphers, you will notice that the former is far less skillful than the latter. Such being the case with little things like arts, I never put any trust in the appearances women try to keep up to attract men.
