帚木132・133：(左馬頭)「さてまた同じ頃、まかりかなひし所は、人もたちまさり、心ばせ、まことにゆゑありと見えぬべく、うち読み走り書きかいひく爪音手つき口つき、皆たどたどしからず、見聞きわたり侍りき。見る目も事もなく侍りしかば、このさがな者をうちとけたる方にて、時々隠ろへ見侍りし程は、こよなく心とまり侍りき。
中将の言葉に勇気付けられたか、左馬頭の経験談はまた別の女の身の上へと移っていく。「さてさてまた同じ頃、私めが通っておりました女は、さっきの指食いとは違って、人品卑しからず、心映えもまことにひとかどあるという女性で、歌をさらさら詠み、字も巧みに走り書きするし、琴弾く手つき爪音もなかなか、手といい口といいみな達者なもので、いつも感心して見聞きしておりました。しかもけっこうな美形(難点がなくて好ましい女)でもあったので、かのヤキモチ女(指食い女)の家を気の置けない所として通う一方で、こちらの女にもこっそりと逢っておりました。で、二股をかけているうちは、この女に相当心惹かれていたのです。
N君：可哀そうな運命をたどった指食い女の話の後に、こういう別の女の話を持ち出すとは、左馬頭の感覚を疑いますが、これが当時の一般的状況だったのでしょう。
Encouraged by Chujo's admiration, Samanokami became more eloquent to move on to his another experience. "To resume the thread of my talk, I had another woman then, who was completely superior to the 'finger-biting woman' in many aspects. There was something noble about her. She had a considerably good disposition. Having had no trouble in composing an elegant poem, writing beautiful letters and playing Koto with attractively placticed hands, she was so good at all arts that I was always charmed by all her skills. In addition to that, she was a quite beautiful lady. While frequently visiting the house of of the jealous 'finger-biting woman' as a place where I didn't have to take care, I used to visit her secretly, too. It was true that I was quite absorbed in her charm when I dealt with the two women simultaneously.
S先生：第1文末の his another experience はいただけません。たとえば「私のこの本」と言いたい時、my this book とか this my book はダメで this book of mine が正しい。ゆえにこの場面では another experience of his となります。第2文冒頭の To resume the thread of my talk「私の話をもう一度始めますと」という副詞句のフリはとても感じが出ていて好感が持てます。thread は糸ですね、こういう言い方があるのでしょうね、こちらが勉強させてもらいました。第3文前半の分詞構文ですが、easily, beautifully, excellently のような副詞を連ねるほうが文の恰好がつくと思うので、Composing an elegant poem easily, writing letters beautifully, and playing the Koto excellently, と変えてみましょう。この方が簡潔ですし、なんと言っても軽いですからね。
Encouraged by Chujo's words, Sama-no-Kami began to talk about his experience with another woman. "At about the same time, I was visiting another woman. She was quite different from the one who had bitten my finger. She was personable and kind-hearted. She composed poems easily, scribbled letters skillfully and played the Koto beautifully. I was impressed by her adroitness in every art. And her looks were perfect. While calling on the jealous woman with no reserve, I went to see the tender woman in secret from time to time. I was more attracted to the latter when I was visiting both women.
