帚木225・226・227：紀の守に仰せ言たまへば、うけたまはりながらしりぞきて、(紀伊守)「伊予の守の朝臣の家に、つつしむこと侍りて、女房なむまかり移れる頃にて、せばき所に侍れば、なめげなる事や侍らむ」と、下に嘆くを聞き給ひて、(源氏)「その人ぢかからむなむ嬉しかるべき。女どほき旅寝は物おそろしき心地すべきを、ただその几帳のうしろに」と宣へば、(女房)「げによろしきおまし所にも」とて、人走らせやる。いとしのびてことさらに、ことごとしからぬ所をと急ぎ出で給へば、おとどにも聞こえ給はず、御供にもむつまじき限りして、おはしましぬ。
さっそく紀伊守にその旨申し付けると、紀伊守は了承こそしたものの引き下がり際に「父伊予守の家に物忌みの沙汰がございましてな、ただいまその女房どもが拙宅のほうへ参っております最中ですので、なにかと手狭でございます。そこへ源氏様のお出ましとなれば、御無礼な事件でも出来せぬかと、それが心配で」と、そんな風にひそかに嘆いたというのを人づてに聞いて、源氏は「いや、その人けが多いというところが却って嬉しいんだよ。女っけのない旅先の宿なんてのは心細くていけない。なに、人が多くて手狭だというのなら、私は女たちの寝ている几帳の後ろあたりにゴロ寝でもさせてもらいますから」と言った。すると女房達は「まあまあ、却ってそれは良いお休みどころじゃございませんか」と興じながら、すぐに紀伊守邸へ人を走らせた。今回はまったくのお忍びということで、ことさらおおげさにならない所を選んだというわけで、急いで出ていくについて、舅の左大臣にもこのことは知らせず、お供にも本当に親しく召し使う者だけを連れていった。

"Oh, that situation sounds convenient for you, doesn't it ?" Smiling ironically, the lasies-in-waiting sent a servant to Kii-no-kami in order to inform him of Genji's schedule that evening. This time, Genji's visiting the house of Kii-no-kami was completely secret. Since he chose it as one of inconspiquous destinations and hastily set off, he did not let the Minister know the plan. He left the Minister's in a hurry for the Kii-no-kami's with a few familiar members.
S先生：全体としてよく書けています。特に第5文の all the more＋形容詞＋for ～ 「～であるがゆえにかえって~」という言い方はここではピッタリで、N君も腕を上げて来たな、と思いました。しかしよくない所もあります。第1文の不定冠詞が an になっているのは変です。one の o はスペルとしては母音ですが、発音としては子音[w]ですから、不定冠詞は an ではなくて a です。同じ第1文の bed room は間違いで、bedroom という一語でなければなりません。今回のN君の作文は全体としてよくできているのに、このようにしょっぱなの所に小さなミスがあると、採点者の心象が著しく悪くなってしまいます。「入りをスムーズに」を心がけましょう。さて今回私が最もきつく言いたいのは第8文です。If the place were not spacious, I would lie down outside of the partitions ～ 「手狭なら几帳の後ろにでもゴロ寝しましょう」とN君は書いています。よく考えてみてください。この英文は仮定法の文ですが、そもそも仮定法というのは「話者・筆者が、そうはならないと知りながらわざと現実とは異なる仮定していることを聞き手・読者に知らせるために、おかしな形の動詞を使うという方法で、普通の条件節話法とは全く違う」言い方でした。この場合、源氏は紀伊守邸が手狭であることを既に知っているのだから、仮定法を使うのは変なのです。仮定法を使ってはいけない、だって、現にそうなのだから、と私は言いたいのです。N君に限らず生徒がよくやる間違いなのですが、仮定法を覚えたことで仮定法じゃない場面で仮定法を使ってしまう、ということがあるのです。ここは普通の条件節の文なのですから普通に、If the place is not spacious, I will lie down outside of the partitions ～ と書けばよいのです。普通の条件節では未来のことでも現在時制で書くことになっているので If the place will be ～ とする必要はなく、この可愛らしい規則は中学生くらいでも知っているようです。この規則はあくまでも普通の条件節に対して適用される規則ですから、仮定法とは何の関係もありません。ここの所がこんがらがっている生徒がけっこういます。
Genji sent a messenger to the Governor of Kii to tell him that he would visit his house. Kii consented to hid request, but when the messenger withdrew, he said, "My father, Iyo-no-kami, is purifying himself, and all his ladies-in-waiting have come to my house. I feel very lonely when I have to stay at a rural inn with no women about at all. If the rooms are crowded with so many ladies, I don't mind lying down to sleep behind the wooden curtains of the room where ladies are sleeping." "Well, well, if that is what you want, it should be the best bedroom for you," said the ladies laughing and they sent a messenger to the Governor to inform him of Genji's intention. This time Genji set off secretly. Leaving the residence in haste, he took his nearest retrainers with him without telling the Minister where he was going.
N君：知らなかった単語を調べておきます。第2文の consent to ～「～に同意する、～を承諾する」で、研究社の辞書には He consented to our camping there. という例文が出ていました。第5文の turmoil「騒ぎ」で、The town was in a turmoil during the election.「町は選挙期間中、上を下への大騒ぎだった」という例文が出ていました。第5文の主節 I fear something rude might happen. の might はどういう意味でしょうか？
