「なにしろ急なお渡りでございまして」と紀伊守はぼやいて見せたが、源氏かたの者どもはまったく頓着しない。寝殿の東に面した部屋をかたずけて、そこに仮のお休み所がしつらえられた。話に出ていた遣り水の造りようなど、それなりに趣向を凝らしてある。庭には田舎家めいた柴垣をめぐらして、前の植え込みもなかなか繊細に気配りして植え渡してある。水面を渡ってくる風は涼しくて、そこへ虫の声もかすかに聞こえ、また蛍が飛び交うなど風情満点である。
