古文研究法112-1 堤中納言物語「ほどほどの懸想(けそう)」より：祭の頃はなべて今めかしう見ゆるにやあらむ、あやしき小家の半蔀(はじとみ)も葵(あふひ)などかざして心地よげなり。わらはべの衵(あこめ)・袴(はかま)清げにてさまざまの物忌(ものいみ)ども付け化粧(けそう)じて、我も劣らじといどみたる景色どもにて行き違ふは、をかしく見ゆるを、ましてその際(きは)の小舎人(こどねり)・随身(ずいじん)などは殊(こと)に思ひとがむるも理(ことわり)なり。
4月にある賀茂の例祭の頃は世間一般が華やかな感じに見えるのであろう、貧しげな小家の格子雨戸までもが葵を付けたりして気持ち良さそうである。少女がブラウスやハカマをきれいに装い、色々な魔除けのアクセサリーなんかを付けておめかしをして「自分も負けまい」と競う様子で街を往来しているのは悪くない景色だが、ましてその少女たちとちょうどお似合いの年頃の、警固係や付き人をしている少年たちは、そのような少女たちの様子に特に注意を払うのも無理ないことだ。
N君：平安時代の風俗が活き活きと描写されていて、とても興味深く読みました。少年少女の生態は昔も今も変わりませんね。「祭り」と言えば「賀茂祭」と決まっているそうです。「今めかし」は「華やか」。「あやし」は「貧しい」。「半蔀」は「格子形の上半雨戸」です。「衵」は「少女が身につけるブラウス」。「清げなり」は、清潔、ということではなくて、good-looking のような意味です。「物忌」は「魔除けのアクセサリー」。「化粧じて」は、顔の化粧のみならず衣服も着飾って、の意。「いどみたる景色ども」は「競争している様子」。「そのきはの」はここでは「そのような少女たちとちょうどお似合いの年頃の」くらいの意味です。「思ひとがむる」は、批判する、ではなくて「気にかける」「注意を払う」の意。
