桐壺137：母后(ははぎさき)、よになくかしづき聞こえ給ふを、うへに侍ふ内侍(ないし)のすけは、先帝の御時の人にて、かの宮にも親しう参り慣れたりければ、いはけなくおはしましし時より見奉り、今もほの見奉りて、(典侍)「うせ給ひにし御息所の御かたちに似給へる人を、三代の宮づかへに伝はりぬるに、え見奉りつけぬを、きさいの宮の姫宮こそ、いとようおぼえておひでさせ給ひけれ。
先帝第四皇女の御母后も、この姫のことをならびなく愛育していらっしゃったのであったが、帝の近侍の女房典侍という人は実は先の帝のときに近侍に上がった人で、四の宮の御母后の御殿にも親しく出入りしていたことがある、そんな関係で、四の宮が幼少の頃からよく見知っていたし、また今でもちらりと拝見する機会がある。そんな典侍があるとき帝にこんなことを申し上げた。「亡くなられた桐壺さまの美しさに似た方をと思って心がけておりますが、私も先々帝、先帝、そうして今上帝と三代にお仕えしてまいって、なかなかちらりと似た方だって見掛けることがございませんでしたが、先帝のお后様の御殿においでの四の姫宮様は、それはもう桐壺さまにたいそうよく似た御容貌にお育ちでございますのよ。

One day she whispered the Emperor, "I have been unable to look for a beautiful woman who resembles the late Kiritsubo in spite of my long searching for such a beauty during a row of three consecutive periods including the incumbent Emperor's. However, I am sure that the fourth lady born of the predecessor's Empress has grown up to be very like the Kiritsubo.
S先生：典侍、先帝后、第四皇女、という具合に女性の登場人物が3人もいるので、作文しにくい面もあったと思いますが、その問題はだいたいクリアできています。第3文の So she still has an opportunity to see her now. では、はじめの she が典侍で、あとの her が第四皇女ですね。そして第4文の One day she whispered the Emperor, の she は再び典侍です。誤解が発生しないように、代名詞を使わないようにする手もありますが、そうするとあまりに説明的な文章になってしまって読者が嫌がります。このあたりの判 断は非常に難しいところで、正解はないのですが「読んていてスッと入ってくるかどうか」に気をつけて下さい。さて文章全体としてもだいたい良いのですが、第4文の during a row of three consecutive periods が気になります。おそらくN君は row を使って三代ひと続きを表したかったのでしょうが、もっと簡潔に for three reigns としてみてはいかがでしょうか。

She had often visited the Empress's Palace in person. Therefore she had been friendly with the fourth Princess since her childhood, and even now saw her from time to time. Once she said to the Emperor, "I have been serving for three successive reigns, but I have never seen any beautiful lady who resembles the Lady of Kiritsubo. The fourth Princess of the Empress dowager, however, has grown up and bears a striking resemblance to the late Lady.
N君：第3文の in person は「中継ぎを通すことなくじかに」のような意味だとおもわれます。第4文の friendly は -ly が付いているけど副詞ではなくて形容詞です。同じような仲間に lonely や kindly があります。-ly を見てもすぐに副詞と思い込まないほうがよさそうです。第6文の dowager は「高貴な男性の未亡人」とのことでした。最後のところの bear a striking resemblance to ~ という言い方はグッときますね。僕の平板な表現とはだいぶ違う感じがします。
