N君：見慣れない単語や言い方がどんどん出てきて困ります。第1文は「弘徽殿女御はとても意地悪で桐壺を見下げる始末であり彼女が死んでもかまわないとさえ思うくらいだった」の意ですよね。普段は so ~ that ~ の形しか見ないのでこのような構成は目新しいです。第2文は語順注意ですね。inauspicious「不吉な」。第3文の that節の中味の would not は以前出て来た「強い拒絶の意志」を表現しているのでしょう。第4文の before long は使えそうでなかなか使えない副詞句です。long before との違いに要注意ですね。辞書から例文をつまんでおきます。It was not long before she came.「まもなくやってきた」、She will be back before long.「すぐ戻るでしょう」。第4文最後の she slept the eternal sleep も見たこと無い言い方でビックリ。die をやや雅に言うと、pass away とか このような言い方になるのでしょう。
