The grandmother ha been lamenting for the death of her daughter, Kiritsubo, with no way of consoling herself.  She, too, has grieved to death probably because she was  anxious for passing away in order to meet Kiritsubo in another world.  Hearing the news, the Emperor felt sad deeply again, which was when the young Prince was 6 years old.

She, too, has grieved to death では前の文で lament が使われていて意味が重複しますし、なんとなく不自然なので、思い切って At last she died という具合に簡潔にしましょう。

After the death of Kiritsubo, the young Prince's grandmother was deeply depressed, with no means to console herself, and only wished to go to the next world where her daughter lived.  She finally breathed her last breath probably because her wish had been granted. The Emperor deeply grieved over her death once again.  It happened when the young Prince was six years old.
