古文研究法138-1 新古今集より：春の夜の夢の浮橋とだえして 峯に分かるる横雲の空
春の夜にまどろむ夢がふと醒めてしまった。橋の代用につなぎ合わせた小舟の綱が切れて、小舟がどこかへ流れ去ってしまったのだ。ふと見上げると峯のあたりで横にたなびく雲もほのかな曙光のうちに左右に分かれてゆくところであった。
N君：「浮橋」というのは「橋の代用に繋ぎ合わせた小舟の群れ」だったのですね。これは言われないと絶対に分かりません。要するにこの歌は、春の夢・浮橋・たなびく雲、がそれぞれに途切れて別れていく様子を歌っていたのです。いやー、深いです。
Suddenly I came out of a sweet dream at a spring night. As small rafts have flowed down with a rope connecting them to form a makeshift bridge untied by itself, so has my dream flew away somewhere. Sitting up in my bed, I saw streaming clouds over the mountain parting to right and left at daybreak like my dream having vanished.
S先生：第2文前半の with＋O＋C は付帯状況を表す表現で、締まった文章にするのにもってこいです。ここでは a rope の後にこれを説明するための句がくっついたために O が幾分長くなってしまいました。その後の C は過去分詞の untied by itself「ひとりでに解けて」が来ています。by itself は spontaneously でもよいですが、spontaneously はいかにも硬い感じがするので by itself の方が良いでしょう。この untied を早合点して united と見誤ってしまうと訳がわからなくなるので要注意ですね。付帯状況の C の部分には、形容詞・過去分詞・現在分詞・副詞・前置詞句、などいろいろなものが使われます。少しだけ例を挙げておきましょう。Don't speak with your mouth full.「ものをほおばったまましゃべるな」。He sat with his eyes shut.「目をつぶって座った」。He stood up with his hat off.「かぶっていた帽子を取って立った。He was walking with a pipe in his mouth.「パイプを口にくわえたまま歩いていた」。さて第3文ですが、ここは過去時制よりも現在時制にするほうがイキイキとした感じが出るので saw を see に変えてみるのも一興でしょう。
I was in a doze at a spring night, when suddenly I woke up. As small rafts for a bridge float away with the ropes binding them broken for some reason or other, so has my sweet dream drifted off somewhere. Looking up at the sky unconsciously, I see clouds over the peak of the mountain slowly flowing away to the right or to the left at the faint break of dawn.
N君：先生の第2文に出てきた small rafts for a bridge は「橋の代わりの小舟たち」という意味ですか？
S先生：そうです。代用の for とでもいいましょうか。
