古文研究法118-1 徒然草151段より：ある人のいはく「歳五十になるまで上手に至らざらむ芸をば捨つべきなり。励み習ふべき行く末もなし、老人の事をば人もえ笑はず、衆に交はりたるもあいなく見苦し。おほかた、よろづの仕業(しはざ)はやめて暇(いとま)あるこそ、めやすくあらまほしけれ。
ある人が言った。「歳が50代なるまで上達しないような芸事はやめちまうがよろしい。その年齢では骨折って勉強するほどの将来性もないし、老人のする事をまわりの人も笑うことができず、人の中に出ていくのは大変みっともない。だいたい年をとったら色々な仕事はやめて静かに暮らすのが感じがよくて、皆そうあってほしいものだ。
N君：吉田兼好先生はいいことを言いますね。先日、高校の卒業式にどこかの来賓が来て長々と挨拶していましたが、長い上にまとまりを欠き、何が言いたいのか全く分かりませんでした。ああいうのを耄碌(もうろく)というのでしょう。「行く末」は「将来性」の意、「めやすし」は「感じが良い」の意です。不可能を表す「え＋否定語」が久し振りに登場しました。
A certain man said, "If you reached 50 and if you were absorbed in an art in spite of not being cut out for it, you had better cease it. Aging over 50, you have no chance of success even if you devote yourself to the art. The young around you are not allowed to make little of what you do as hard as you can. In such a blind situation, it is very shameful that you poke your nose into their business. It is decent that the aged resign their posts and live quietly. I recommend you to live a humble life.
S先生：今日は色々あります。第1文の if 節ですが、ここは事実を言っているのですから普通の条件節であり、仮定法を使うべきではありません。したがって、reached を resch に変え、were を are に変えて下さい。第1文後半の be cut out for ～「～に適任で、うってつけで」はかなり高級な言い回しでしたが、ここでは一応適切だったと言ってよいでしょう。第2文冒頭の Aging over 50, ～ では算用数字がそのまま書かれているのがどうもいけません。ここは fifty に変えて下さい。文学作品でアラビア数字がそのまま使われることはあまりないように思います。第5文ですが It is decent that ～ という言い方はありません。It is decent of you to do. とか You are decent to do. という言い方はあります。したがってここでは It is decent of the aged to resign their posts and live quietly. くらいが適切だと思います。
You had better give up polishing your art if you still cannot improve it in your fifties. However hard you may work, you won't be able to realize your dream at your age. It is rude of anyone to make light of what you have done, however useless and meaningless, while it is undesirable for you to try to keep company with others. Don't be involved in all sorts of work but live a peaceful life, and you will give us a good impression.
今日は It is ＋形容詞＋of ＋人＋ to do の形が出たので、これに関して英作談義をしてみましょう。この形容詞が「良し悪しを問わず人の性質や行為を評価するような場合」には前置詞は for ではなくて of を使います。形容詞としてはたとえば、wise, stupid, kind, good, wrong, careless, cruel, polite, など。例文を挙げておきましょう。It is careless of you to say such a thing. この文は「人」ここでは you を主語にすることもできて、You are careless to say such a thing. となります。さて形容詞が例えば important ならどうなるでしょうか？ important は人の性格を表さないので前置詞はこれまでの常識通りに for でよいでしょう。It is important for you to go at once. 先程のように you を主語にすることはできませんが、that 節を使うことは可能で It is important that you (should) go at once. となります。この that 節の中では should を省略してもよいですが、その場合には動詞を原形にして下さい。たとえ主語が he であっても動詞は goes ではなくて go ですから間違わないようにしましょう。
