古文研究法99 源氏物語若紫上より：皇子(みこ)たちは春宮(とうぐう)をおき奉りて、女宮たちなむ四所おはしましける。その中に藤壺と聞こえしは、【先帝の源にぞおはしましける、まだ坊と聞こえさせし時、参り給ひて、高き位にも定まり給ふべかりし人の、とりたてたる御後見もおはせず、母方もその筋となく、ものはかなき更衣腹にてものし給ひければ、御交(まじ)らひのほども心細げにて、太后の尚侍(ないしのかみ)を参らせ奉り給ひて、傍(かたはら)に並ぶ人無くもてなし聞こえなどせしほどに、気押(けお)されて、帝(みかど)も御心のうちに、いとほしきものには思ひ聞こえさせ給ひながら、降(お)りゐさせ給ひにしかば、効(かひ)なく口惜しくて、世の中を恨みたるやうにて亡(う)せ給ひにし】、その御腹の女三の宮を、あまたの御なかに、すぐれて愛(かな)しきものに思ひかしづき聞こえ給ふ。

N君：これは恐ろしい文です。結局この文は「帝は藤壺との間に生まれた第3皇女=女三の宮 を特に可愛がった」という簡潔な内容なのですが、藤壺という女性に対する長々しい説明【～】が文の途中に挟み込まれている、という構造になっているのです。これを「はさみこみ」と呼んでおり、英語で言えば「関係代名詞の非制限用法」みたいなものです。ただしこの文では、その挟み込みが異様に長くて手に負えません。その上、古文では定番の「書かれないまま主語が移り変わる」という現象がバンバン起きているので、解釈が困難です。はっきり言ってこの文を正しく解釈することは今の僕には全く無理なので、今回は鑑賞にとどめさせて頂きます。「春宮」「坊」は「皇太子」の意で、英語では Crown Prince です。「参り給ひて」が大問題です。「参る」というのは基本的に「卑所から貴所へ移る」の意なので、ここでは「入内(じゅだい)なさって」くらいの意味。ちなみに「参る」の反対が「まかる」になります。「高き位にも定まり給ふべかりし人の」の「の」は逆接で、「皇后にもなってしかるべき人だったのだが」という意味になります。次の「太后の～」の「の」は主格。「降りゐさせ給ふ」は「譲位なさる」。「効なく」は「皇后の位に昇ることもなく」です。「かしづく」は「養育する」で英語なら cherish です。

S先生：全体的に、可もなく不可もなし、といった感じで、淡々と説明されています。今回は本文があまりにも常軌を逸しているため、英語表現どうこう、ということではなくて、情報を整理して過不足ないように伝える、ということでよいと思います。第4文には deprive A of B「AからBを奪う」が出ました。これはもともと They deprived him of his freedom. という能動態の文章だったのが、受動態になると He was deprived of his freedom. になります。本文でも he was deprived of a membership of the Imperial Family. となっていて受動態の文章になっています。さて以下の私の作文では、できるだけ簡潔に表現するように心がけてやってみました。

It was the third Prince among the four that the Emperor loved most. He raised her with the greatest affection.
