帚木25・26：(中将の言葉続き)とる方なく口惜しききはと、優なりとおぼゆばかりすぐれたるとは、数等しくこそ侍らめ。人の品高く生まれぬれば、人にもてかしづかれて隠るること多く、自然にその気配こよなかるべし。

S先生：今日の作文は悪い所もあり良い所もあり、でした。第1文の that節の中味ですが、such ～ who ～ という組み合わせはいけません。worthless women は前回第282回の終わりに話題に出たので、such を除外して定冠詞を置きましょう。第1文の終わりのほうにある形容詞 superlative「最上の、無比の」 はかなり高級な単語ですがよく知っていたね。highest と同じような意味ですね。だからといって who are in the highest class としてしまうと、身分の最高位を表すこととなって原文の意味とは違ってくるので、ここはやはりN君の作文どうり、who are superlative in anything とするのが良いでしょう。第2文の文末にある副詞句 in an inconspicuous way は間違いではないが、副詞 inconspicuously の一語にまとめた方がスッキリすると思います。第3文の no wonder 構文「～は無理もない、当然だ」はとても上手に使うことができました。
I suppose that the ladies with no merits are as rare as the ladies with no faults. But if a lady is of a good family and brought up carefully, you will find it difficult that she has some faults. Then she will look more dignified than she really is.
今日の英作談義は「不定詞の to か前置詞の to か」について例文を見ていきましょう。この問題はこれまでも何度か出てきましたが、試験にもよく出ることですし、ここらでもう一回おさらいしておきましょう。You will soon come to like this town.「じきに好きになるでしょう」は不定詞。The committee is divided in opinion when it comes to putting the plan into practice.「実行に移すということになると意見が割れる」は前置詞です。when it comes to+名詞 がひとつの決まり文句になっています。He used to live in the country.「昔住んでいた」は不定詞。He is used to living in the country.「住むのに慣れている」は前置詞です。後者の used は accustomed でも良いです。たとえば Have you got accustomed to using this dictionary ?「もう使い慣れた？」のように使います。
