桐壺199：御かたがたの人々、世の中におしなべたらぬを選(え)りととのへすぐりて、さぶらはせ給ふ。
左大臣家ではたとえば源氏の身の回りのお世話をする女房たちにしても、凡庸な物でなく一級の女房をえりすぐって奉仕させる。
N君：For example, eliminating mediocre servants, the Minister's chose prominent ladies-in-waiting who were to be engaged in taking care of him.
S先生：For example, the Minister selected the first class ladies, not the common, to have them wait on Genji.
N君：弱い使役動詞 have ですね。「女房たちをえりすぐって源氏の世話をさせる」で良いと思いますが「世話をしてもらう」のような意もすこし含んでいる感じがします。
S先生：そういう捉え方でよいと思います。今日の英作談義はいつもと違ってちょっと高尚な「金言・格言」というものを味わってみましょう。wise saying とか aphorism とか言われるもので、有名人が口走った短めの言葉です。その内容が心にグサッと刺さります。作文上のテクニックにも留意して見ていこう。
1. John F. Kenedy : And so, my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can for your country. 「国があなたに何をしてくれるかではなく、あなたが国のためにできることを考えよう」
2. Abraham Lincoln : You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time. 「皆を一時的に、あるいは一部の人をずっと、騙すことはできても、皆をずっと騙すことはできない」

N君：僕の作文で使った mediocre「二流の」が偶然にもアインシュタインの格言にも出てきました。これで mediocre は忘れられない単語になりました。
