古文研究法117-1 芦刈(谷崎潤一郎)より：なべて自然の風物といふものは見る人の心々(こころごころ)であるから、こんな所は一顧の値打ちも無いやうに感ずる者もあるであらう。けれども私は、雄大でも奇抜でもないかういう凡山凡水に対するほうが、かへって甘い空想に誘はれて、いつまでもそこに立ちつくしてゐたいやうな気持ちにさせられる。
N君：「見渡せば山もと霞む水無瀬川 ゆふべは秋と何思ひけむ」(夕暮れは秋が良いと思っていたが春の夕暮れもいいなあ) と詠んだ後鳥羽上皇の水無瀬離宮を、谷崎潤一郎が訪れた時の感慨を記述した文章です。これまでやってきた古文ではありませんが、古文関連のエッセイ、ということで、英語にしてみます。
Generally speaking, a landscape liked by one is not necessarily liked by another. Therefore, some people may not be touched at all by the scene of Minase. However, I am inclined to stand there and see the mediocre scene because I am tempted into bathing in a sweet fantasy all the more for its non-magnificient and common view.
S先生：第3文前半に出てくる mediocre「二流の」は不要です。後に続くbecause 節の中に non-magnificent や common が出てきているので、ここでmediocre を入れる必要もないでしょう。入れるとかえってくどい感じになってしまいます。第3文後半の bathing は文字通り「水に浸る」の意味ですからここには不適切です。ここは「意識が没入する」場面ですから losing myself くらいに変えましょう。all the more for ～「～のためにかえって」は使い方の難しい言い方ですが、ここでは適切に使うことができました。次の non-magnificient はスペルミスです。正しくは non-magnificent です。初見の時に間違って覚えてしまうと、何年経っても間違ったまま思い込んでいることがあるので、気を付けたいところです。
In general, it depends on how you feel to see natural scenery whether it will make you move greatly. Some people may think that Minase is not worth visiting at all. But the scenery here, though neither magnificent nor singular, tempts me into a sweet fancy and inclines me to keep standing for a long time.
