桐壺198：五日六日(いつかむゆか)さぶらい給ひて、おほいとのに二三日(ふつかみか)など、たえだえにまかで給へど、ただ今はおさなき御ほどに罪なくおぼしなして、いとなみかしづき聞こえ給ふ。
そのため源氏は、宮中に五・六日居ては左大臣宅に二・三日下がる、といった程度で、絶え絶えにしか通っていかないのだがそれでも左大臣家のほうでは、なにぶんまだ幼いお年頃だから無理もなかろう、と強いて思うことにして、せいぜい源氏のために心を尽くしてもてなしをする。

S先生：今回も多くの直しが入ります。第1文の算用数字は違和感があります。それぞれ five or six, two or three に変えましょう。two or three の前にある前置詞は with ではなくて at のほうがよい。interval という目的語が with よりも at を指向するからです。結局 stay in Palace for five or six days at two or three days' intervals となります。これに続く目的格の関係代名詞節は文法的には特に誤りはないのですが、interval が「時に関する名詞」なので、 関係副詞 when を使うほうがよい。すると必然的に spend の目的語が必要になるので、結局 intervals when he spent his days というような恰好になります。第2文は不要なのでは？ と思いますが強いて入れるなら Considering the frequency, his visit of the Minister's was within tolerance. くらいでどうでしょうか。ちなみにここで出て来た the Minister's は「左大臣家の人々」の意であり、次の第3文では再び the Minister's と書くよりも they で代用しましょう。さてこの第3文の主節の述部ですが、どうも問題が多い。leave his infrequent visits acceptable は意味が通りにくいのでいっそのこと accept his infrequent visits as proper くらいにしてみてはいかがでしょうか。結局第3文主節は they accepted his infrequent visits as proper と直したわけですが、流れとして重いのでもう少し構成を練り直したほうが良いですね。第4文の beyond 以下はなかなか工夫の効いた表現で好ましいが、やはりどこか重い感じがします。内裏にばかり寝起きしてなかなか婚家(左大臣家)に帰ってこない源氏を、左大臣家の人々が快くは思っていないのだが「まあまだ若いからね」と許しているニュアンスを、どのように表現するかが問題となっています。読み手の頭にスーッと入っていくような簡潔で締まった表現を追求しましょう。
Therefore he spent five or six days at Court, and it was only two or three days that he stayed at the residence of the Minister of the Left. Still the family treated him considerately, forcing themselves to think that it could not be helped because he was too young anyway.
