桐壺191：宮の御はらは、蔵人の少将にて、いと若うおかしきを、右のおとどの御なかはいとよからねど、え見すぐし給はで、かしづき給ふ四の君にあはせ給へり。
なかでも、女君と同腹の兄は蔵人の少将という位にあって、これもたいそう若くて美男ときている。そこで右大臣としては、左大臣とあまり仲良くないけれど、このまま放ってもおけないので、大事に育てていた四番目の娘をこの蔵人少将に縁づけたのである。
N君：Among them the bride had an elder brother from the same mother. He was on the rank of a General in Secretary Office, and happened to be young and beautiful like Genji. It was true that the Minister of the Right was not getting along with the Minister of the Left, but the former could not leave the situation as it was. He resigned himself to marrying his fourth daughter, whom he had cherished since her childhood, to the General.
S先生：第1文の from は of でもよいです。かなり以前にも出て来た「起点の of」ですね。辞書には He came of a good family.「名門の出」という例文がでておりました。もちろん from でもよいですが、出身を言う時には of が使われることが多い印象です。第3文の「仲が悪い」ですが、was not getting along with ~「～とうまくいってない」を使ったのは工夫が見えて好感が持てますが、もっと簡潔に was on bad terms with ~ を使う方がスッキリすると思います。第4文の resign oneself to+名詞「甘んじて～に従う」とはまた難しい言い方を持ってきましたね。辞書にも She resigned herself to spending a boring night.「退屈な夜を過ごさざるを得なかった」という例文が出ていました。前回の英作談義で「不定詞の to と前置詞の to」をやったので、その影響がN君の頭に残っていたのかもしれませんね。たしかに resign oneself to+動名詞 の形は「前置詞の to」の用例として好適ですね。しかし今回の場合はこれを使うと、もってまわった感じがします。大仰なのです。もっと簡潔にいきましょう。resigned himself to marrying をただ一語 married に変えましょう。この marry は他動詞で marry A to B「AをBと結婚させる」という具合に使い、使役的な意味を持っています。したがって今回の場合でも He married his fourth daughter to the General. で立派な一文です。marry については第254回でも検討しているので覗いてみて下さい。
Above all, the bride's elder brother of the same mother, who served as a high officer in charge of ceremonies, was a very handsome lad. Though both Ministers was not on so good terms, the Minister of the Right thought that things must not be left as they were. And so he decided to marry his dearest fourth daughter to the high officer.
N君：lad という単語は初めて見ました。boy よりも少し年上の「若者」の意で youngster とほぼ同じ意味なのですね。lady となにか関係があるのでしょうか。
