帚木6：宮腹の中将は、なかに親しくなれ聞こえ給ひて、あそびたはぶれをも、人よりは心やすくなれなれしくふるまひたり。
なかでも帝の妹を母に持つ頭中将(もと蔵人少将)は、とりわけ源氏と親しくおつきあいしている間柄で、管弦の楽を奏する折りもまた他の遊びに際しても、他の人よりはずいぶん心安く慣れて振る舞っていた。
N君：すると源氏と頭中将はいとこ同士ということですね。

S先生：第1文の be on good terms with ~「～と仲が良い」は上手に使えました。第2文の終わりのほうに as well as が出てきました。A and B では A と B は対等ですが、A as well as B の場合は幾分 A のほうに力点があって「B と同様に A も」というような意になります。どっちでもいいじゃないか、というご意見もあるでしょうが、「僕同様あいつも臆病者だ」と言いたい時に、He as well as I まで来て、be動詞をどうするの ？ となって困るのです。he のほうに力点があるので be動詞は am ではなく is となります。He as well as I is a coward. です。ちなみに musical concert とその他の遊びはどっちが主ということもないので、今回の場合は and でもよいし、まあ as well as でもよいでしょう。最後の play は pastime のほうがよいでしょう。
