帚木8：里にても我がかたのしつらいまばゆくて、君の出で入り給ふにうちつれ聞こえ給ひつつ、よるよる学問をも遊びをももろともにしてをさをさたちおくれず、いづくにてもまつはれ聞こえ給ふほどに、おのづからかしこまりもえおかず、心のうちに思ふ事をも隠しあへずなむ、むつれ聞こえ給ひける。
この中将は実家左大臣邸でも自分の居室のしつらいをまばゆいばかり立派に飾り立てて、そこに源氏が出入りするにつけても行動を共にし、学問であれ音楽であれ常に一緒という訳で、自分では源氏におさおさ劣らぬ者と自負しつつ、どこへでも源氏にまとわりついて過ごしている。そんな関係なので自然と源氏に対する遠慮の心もなくなり、内 心に思っていることを包み隠さず打ち明けたりして、いかにも睦ましげな付き合いをしているのであった。
N君：He also set up brightly his own room in his parent's house, the Villa of the Minister of the Left. Genji would visit the room so frequently that the two men always kept company with each other at studying or at playing music. The General had a rigid self-confidence that he was never inferior to Genji in any field. Having spent his youth on such friendly terms with Genji, he gradually came to show no reserve and expose his mind frankly to Genji. Nobody failed to know that they got along well.
S先生：第2文の keep company with each other「いつも一緒に居る」はとても良かったのですが、そのあとの at studying or at playing music がどうもしっくり来ません。at が2回使われているのも気になります。whether it was studying or playing music くらいに変えてみてはどうでしょうか。it was は省略しても構いません。第3文は同格の that をちゃんと使うことができました。第4文の reserve は「蓄え、遠慮」、reservationが「予約」なので混同しないように辞書で用例を確かめておきましょう。第5文は二重否定で来ましたね。「知らない人はいない」＝「皆知っている」ですが、二重否定にすることで、より強い肯定を意味します。今回の使い方もとてもよいと思います。
This person, Chujo, dazzligly and beautifully decorated his own room in the residence of his father, Minister of the Left. When Genji came and went, Chujo was always with him. He was proud that he surpassed Genji in studying or playing instruments, and would follow him about. Since he was on such good terms with Genji, he associated with him with no reserve and confided to him all he thought inwardly. They really seemed to live in harmony with each other.
N君：第1文の Minister に定冠詞が付いていないのは「言い換え」だからですね。第2文の文末にある about はおそらく around と同義で「そこらあたりをウロウロしている様子」を伝えているのだと思います。第3文には三人称単数の代名詞が5個出てきましたが、順に「中将、中将、源氏、源氏、中将」ですよね。この問題は第265回にも出ましたが、こうしてみると案外分かるものですね。「英語が分かってくる」ということは「こういう文章を平気で書き平気で読む」ということなのでしょうか。
