幼い赤ん坊は何が起こっているのかもわからず、ただ側仕えの女房たちが泣きじゃくり父帝も絶えず涙を流していらっしゃるのを、不思議そうに見上げている。
N君：The baby could not understand what had happened. He just saw dubiously the maids sobbing and the Emperor, his father, drawing tears continuously.
S先生：drawing はどうでしょうか。慣用に従って shedding のほうが良いと思います。以下の私の作文の中で出て来た on earth は「いったいぜんたい」みたいな感じで、意を強めるために使ってみました。結構使える副詞句です。
Even when his mother went to the next world, the baby did not know what on earth had happened. He was just looking strangeously at the ladies-in-waiting sobbing and the Emperor, his father, also shedding tears incessantly.
今回は短く終わったのでいつものように英作談義をやります。
(1) remorse「罪悪に対する深い後悔」と conscience「良心」は似てはいるけど少し違います。大修館の英和辞典から例文を挙げると、I felt remorse for having stolen the money.「ひどく後悔した」。My conscience does not allow me to steel the money.「良心が咎めて盗みができない」。
(2) fast はスピードの速さ、early は時間的な速さ を表す。たとえば、a fast runner「足の速い人」、an early riser「早起きの人」。
(3) 前に in の付かない the way の使い方として次の4通りがあって下へいくほどくだけた表現(口語的)となります。the way と how は一緒に使ってはいけません。
This is the way in which he did it.
This is the way that he did it.
This is the way he did it.
This is how he did it. ( the way how はダメ )
N君：the way how とやっていたような気がする。今後気を付けます。
