桐壺3： 同じほど、それより下﨟の更衣たちは、まして安からず、朝夕の宮仕えにつけても、人の心をのみ動かし、恨みを負ふつもりにやありけむ、いと篤しくなりゆき、もの心細げに里がちなるを、いよいよ飽かずあはれなるものに思ほして、人のそしりをもえはばからせ給はず、世のためしにもなりぬべき御もてなしなり。
同じくらいかあるいはそれ以下の出自の更衣たちともなれば心はいよいよ穏やかではない。しかし帝はそのようなことには頓着されないから、朝に夕に桐壺更衣をお呼びになり、彼女が参上するとそのたびに周囲の女たちの嫉妬心は燃え上がり、その恨みが彼女の一身に積もり積もったのであろうか、彼女はとうとう病気がちとなり心細く実家に下がって過ごすことが多くなってしまった。すると帝の御執心はますます募っていくので、周囲の人々がどれほど彼女のことを誹謗中傷しているのかということまでお考えになれず、一国の主が女色に迷って国を傾けた、という昔の中国の話にも似た御惑乱振り あった。
N君：「え ~ ず」は不可能を表します。はからずも玄宗皇帝と楊貴妃のラブロマンスが登場しましたね。第1回から第60回までさんざんやりました。それは日本で言えば奈良時代くらいの話なのでBC750くらいか。桐壺の話がBC950くらいだとすると、200年く らい前の昔話ですね。それにしても古文というやつは主語が省略されがちで、話の筋を見失ってしまいますね。「述部に使われた敬語のレベルから主語を類推する」という作業が必要です。

S先生：第2文ですが、長すぎるので前半でいったんピリオドを打って、後半は It provoked ~ とする手もあるでしょう。第3文の undermine one's health は重要な言い方です。第4文の became は was と迷います。第5文の feel all the more pity for her disease ですが少しずれている。帝は桐壺更衣が病気だから憐れみを感じているわけですが、それに加えて彼女の健気さとか無理して笑うとかがあってより憐れみが増す、という感じにしなければなりません。ゆえに for の後に持ってくるのは her disease ではなくて、例えば her patience とか her smile とかにするのが良いと思います。ここは辞書を引いて研究してください。第6文のdemeanour は物腰とか振る舞いとかいう意味のファジーな単語で、グッと和風になりますね。和風な名詞として texture (肌ざわり、風合い)を思い浮かべました。今後使う場面がありそうです。
