桐壺12：人よりさきにまゐり給ひて、やむごとなき御思ひなべてならず、御子たちなどもおはしませば、この御かたの御いさめのみぞなほわずらはしう、心苦しう思い聞こえさせ給ひける。
弘徽殿女御は人に先駆けて真っ先に入内し、お家柄ゆえ帝が大切になさること並々でなく、第一皇子以外にも王女がたをお生みなので、この方の御諫言だけは帝はいつも気にかけていて、桐壺更衣とのことについては心苦しく感じているために言い訳などもされるのであった。
N君：Kokiden-no-Nyogo was the first Princess among the many ladies who entered the Palace. She was from such a high class family that the Emperor thought highly of Her. She bore Him some daughters besides the first Prince. Therefore the Emperor was always careful for Her warnings and He could not help excusing for His excessive devotion to Kiritsubo-no-Kohi.
S先生：many には通例 the をつけないのでここも除外するべきです。ただし the few(少数者)の反対語としての the many「多数の者たち → 庶民」という言い方はあります。excusing for ですがこれは「言い訳する」の意なので、「下手な言い訳をする」を表現するにはもうひとひねり欲しいところです。make poor excuses for なんてどうでしょうか。
She was the first lady who was allowed to attend on the Emperor before anyone else, and she was loved so tenderly that she bore Him several daughters. So the Emperor paid much attention to Her remonstrations and was forced to make poor excuses for the relations with the lady Kiritsubo.
