桐壺13：かしこき御かげをば頼み聞こえながら、おとしめきずを求め給ふ人は多く、わが身はかよわくものはかなきありさまにて、なかなかなるもの思ひをぞし給ふ。
桐壺更衣は帝のありがたい御加護におすがりしてはいるものの、ことさらにあれやこれやとあげつらう人も多かった。自身は病弱でいつ命が絶えるとも知れぬ状態なので、かえって帝の御寵愛などないほうがよかった、とまで思い悩むのであった。
N君：古文作者はどうしてこれほどまでに主語を書かないのか？
Though relying on the Emperor's gracious support,
Kiritsubo-no-Kohi was suffering a lot of abuses. Furthermore she was in such poor health that she was about to go to the next world any moment. At last she came to think that she might as well lose the Emperor's love as be in this terrible situation.
S先生：be about to do 「今まさに～しそうで」なのですが、現時点で桐壺更衣が病気で死にそうというわけではなく、そもそも原文からして誇張的なので実際どのように表現すべきか悩ましいところです。may as well A as B 「BするくらいならAしたほうがまし」はかなり難しい言い方なので、もうすこし素直な表現も考えてみましょう。
All that the lady of Kiritsubo could count on was His affection for her, but all the ladies around her were enemies, many of whom spoke ill of her behind her back. Besides, she was weak enough to go to another world any moment. Leading such uneasy days, she even wished that she had not been loved by the Emperor.
N君：beside と besides は違う。同じ besides でも前置詞と接続詞では違う。第72回の僕の第3文：She bore Him some daughters besides the first Prince. で出て来た besides は前置詞で「～以外に」の意。今回S先生の第2文冒頭に出て来た Besides, は接続詞で「そのうえさらに」のような意味。lead(live) a happy life「幸福な生活を送る」と辞書にはあったが、どうして lead なのかなあ。
