この桐壺更衣という女性は、四六時中帝の身の回りの世話をするようなありきたりの身分ではなかった。

The second baby's mother, Kiritsubo-no-Kohi, was not a lady from an ordinary rank who was assigned to look after the chores around the Emperor.
S先生：look after the chores で「雑用の世話をする」と考えたようですが大間違いです。look after の後には必ず人が来るべきでしょう。字面だけを追いかけて作文しようとするとこのような落とし穴にはまるので、英語に直す前に内容を吟味することが大切です。

N君：look after the Emperor とすべきでした。attend についても調べてみました。まず他動詞としての attend ですが、（1）職務として医者が病人の世話をする：The doctor attended our family these ten years. （2）従者が主者に付き添って世話をする＝仕える：Many countries were attending the Queen. 次に自動詞のほうですが、attend on にはさっきの(2)と同じ意味：He has many servants attending on him. があり、それから attend to には(1)と同じ意味： She attended to her sick husband. はあるけど(2)の意味はなく、かわりに「仕事などに精を出す」の意味：He attended to his hobby. はある。ゆえに今回の場合、attend あるいは attend on が正解ということになります。
