桐壺24：年頃つねのあつしさになり給へれば御めなれて、なほしばしこころみよ、とのみのたまはするに、日々に重り給ひてただ五六日(いつかむゆか)のほどにいと弱うなれば、母君なくなく奏してまかでさせ奉り給ふ。
ここ数年来桐壺更衣はずっと病気がちだったので、帝はいつものことと軽く考えて「そのままもう少しここで養生したらよい」とだけおっしゃっていたのだが、日に日に容体が重くなり5日6日のうちにたいそう衰弱してしまった。桐壺更衣の母は泣きながら帝にお願いしてようやく彼女を宮廷から里下がりさせたのであった。

S先生：最後の文は barely を文頭に持って来てうまく強調しました。第83回の注意が生きましたね。ただし今回ほめるのはここだけで、小言がたくさんあるのでひとつひとつ注意して聞いて下さい。第1に、tend to do の do は必ず動作動詞であって状態動詞ではない。たとえば「あいつはうそつきの気(け)がある」と言いたい時には、He tends to boast. と言うのであって、He tends to be a liar. とは言わない。ゆえに今回の場合は tended to be を had been に変えて下さい。第2に for the seversl years がいけない。for があるなら these は要らないし、逆に these を使えば for は要らない。第3に、in a row の意味は、for several years あるいは these several years の中にすでに含まれている。ゆえに in a row を削除しましょう。第4に、take care of oneself がひとつのイディオムとなっているので take care of your health はどうもしっくりこない。ゆえに your health を yourself に変えましょう。第5に within 5 or 6 days のところだが、within だと「～以内に」の意になってしまう。今回の場合「5日か6日もしたら」くらいの意だから within よりも in の方が適していると思う。He will be back in a week.「1週間もすれば」。He will be back within a week.「1週間以内に」。第6に、cried to ask は気持ちはわかるが無理筋です。cried and asked にするか、いっそのこと asked に一本化して、Her mother asked the Emperor, crying, for ~ という具合に分詞構文をとりいれても良いと思います。第7に、その for のすぐ後にある her ですが、her mother に取り違えられることの ないように her daughter に変えるのが良いでしょう。
