古文研究法120-1 十訓抄より：京極大殿の御時(おんとき)、白河院宇治に御幸(みゆき)ありけり。余興尽きざるによりていま一日御逗留あるべき由(よし)を申さるるを、「明日還御(かんご)あらば花洛は宇治より北にあたりて日塞(ひふさ)がりの憚(はばか)りあり。このため、いかが」と言ふに、殿下、御遺恨深きところに、、、、
京極大殿の時に白河院が宇治の別邸へ行幸なされた。あとからあとから興味が湧いて尽きないのでもう一泊滞在しようかとおっしゃったところ、家来が「帰京が明日へ延びますと、都は宇治の北にあたるため、日の具合が悪くて帰れません。この点から申しまして延期は如何かと思います」と反対したので、院は大変残念がられた。
N君：いわゆる「方違(かたたが)へ」というやつですね。何月何日はこっちの方向へ行ってはダメ、とか、あっちの方角なら大丈夫、とかいう決まり事があったらしいのです。現代では考えられない迷信 superstition です。京極大殿というのは何かの ceremony の名前でしょう。白河院はもう一泊したいのに、家来は今日帰りましょうと言っていて、今後の展開が楽しみな導入部分です。
One day in the period of Kyogoku-taiden, the retired Emperor Shirakawa visited Uji. Interested in various cultural assets in the area, He told one of His men to let Him stay there one more day. But he was against His request, saying, "If You are to stay here one more day and go back to Kyoto tomorrow, it is in conflict with the divination as to directions, because Kyoto is to the north of Uji. I cannot agree with Your proposal." Hearing the logical suggestion, He could not help accepting that.
S先生：よく書けていますが1点だけ言わせていただきます。第3文の家来のセリフですが、 it is in conflict with ～ にちょっと違和感があります。この it は前半の if 節の内容を指している、とも考えられますが、そんなことよりも「従属節と主節の主語はできるだけ一致させるようにしよう」と考えることのほうが大切です。したがってここは You will come into conflict with ～ くらいに変えるほうが良いと私は思います。
One day during the ceremony of Kyogoku-taiden, the retired Emperor Shirakawa paid a visit to Uji. He enjoyed so much that He said He would like to stay there one more day. One of His retainers opposed His desire, saying, "Kyo is situated to the north of Uji. Properly speaking, You should go back to Kyo today. If You will extend Your stay here until tomorrow, You are sure to have a bad luck. Please allow me to say that I can't agree with Your staying here today." He could not but accept his advice unwillingly.
N君：先生の第5文について質問があります。たとえ未来のことでも副詞節の中身は現在形で書く、という決まりがありました。ところがこの第5文前半の If 節の中に will が使われているのは変だと思います。
S先生：この will は未来時制を表すための will ではなく、「どうしても～するのであれば」という強い意志を表すための will です。このような場合には will が使われます。逆に読者としては「ないハズの will がある、ということは強い意志なのだ」と気付くことができますね。
