Usually strong as they are, parents are always dismayed when they worry about the safety of their child.  Now the saying occurs to me.  I want to inquire of passengers where my son has gone, but I don't know how I can ask about such an unusual affair.  Do they listen to my my question seriously ?  They must listen to me absent-mindedly.  Even the wind makes sounds when it hits the branches of a pine.  Therefore I take it for granted that people should bring me some pieces of information about my son whom I long to meet again.  However, the dream has not been fulfilled at all.  Must I lead a miserable life, sighing over my misfortune ?

Parents can read their children's feelings, but they are at a loss what to do when they are put in a situation where to worry about them.  For example, how should I ask a traveler when I want to know my son's whereabouts ?  Will he listen to my question ?  No, he will just pretend to listen.  Why won't he listen ?  Doesn't he know that even the wind makes sounds when it hits the branches of pine trees ?  He ought to know that I am longing to meet my son again.  Isn't it natural that he should say some words to me at least ?  Ah, shall I have to live a lonely life forever, grieving over my misfortune ?

N君:先生の第1文後半 they(=parents) are put in a situation where to worry about them.

(1) where to worry about them の本来の形は where they(=parents) should worry about them(=children) であり、これでは長いので不定詞を使って短縮したのです。(2) about them の them は children 一択です。
