古文研究法1-2 徒然草：世に語り伝ふる事、まことはあいなきにや、おほくは皆虚言(そらごと)なり。あるにも過ぎて人はものを言ひなすに、まして年月過ぎ、境も隔たりぬれば、言ひたきままに語りなして筆にも書にも書きとどめぬれば、やがてまた定まりぬ。
世間で語り伝えられている事は、本当の事実はつまらないからなのか、たいていは皆デタラメだ。人というものは事実以上に物事を言い立てる上に、まして年月も経ち場所もかけ離れた所だということになると、言いたい放題にでっち上げて文章にまで記録してしまうと、それでもう事実ということになってしまう。
N君：「あいなし(つまらない)」、「やがて(そのまま)」。特にこの「やがて」は現在では「そのうちに」みたいな意味ですが昔は違っていて「そのまま」の意でした。このように形容詞・副詞には「今と昔で意味の異なる単語や、今はもうなくなってしまった単語、が100個くらいある」そうで、これを覚えることが必須、と古文の先生が言ってました。
Most of the attractive tales, which have been passed down from generation to generation, may be lies because the uninteresting facts don't deserve to be told. People tend to talk about everything more exaggeratedly than the fact. Besides, when it comes to an old and remote event, they are easily apt to cook up a false report without reserve. Once described on a paper, the overstatement will remain unchallenged as a fact.
S先生：前回より上出来ですが第1文の because 以下は不要かもしれません。「言わ ずもがな」でしょう。ある歴史学者の先生が「歴史上の名場面はだいたい作り話」の法則を唱えていましたが、700年も前に吉田兼好もこの徒然草第73段で同じことを言っていたとは驚きです。
All that have been passed down from generation to generation are insignificant or groundless. People tend to talk more beautifully than what things are. As years pass by they make up stories as they please and put them on record, especially when they live far from the place where the event occurred. To our regret, those fabrications come to be believed (to be) true.
N君：fabric「織物」、fabricate「嘘や言い訳をでっち上げる」、fabrication「嘘、でっちあげ」。
S先生：プレハブ住宅という言い方がありますがこの prefab は pre-fabrication の略語で、悪い意味はなく「あらかじめ作っておいてあとは組み立てるだけの住宅」のような意味です。
