N君：利口な物知り女がどういう態度に出てくるか興味深々ですね。「世」には「男女の仲」という意味があり、これは知っていなければ絶対に訳せません。

S先生：第1文冒頭の I would like you to assume that ~「～だと思ってもらいたい」ですが、原文のニュアンスとちょっと違います。ここは、I don't mind your assuming that ~ くらいのほうが適しているでしょう。第2文ですが、suggest はふつう不定詞を取りません。I suggest that you (should) change your plan. のように that節を取るのが自然です。したがってここも、she suggested that she saw me beyond ~ のように作文してください。同じく第2文の最後のところで、the usual one I had entered frequently は気持ちはわかるけれども少し不自然です。usual を除外して、one のあとに where を置き、entered frequently をやめて、usually enjoyed myself くらいにしてみてはどうでしょう。まとめると、the one where I had usually enjoyed myself. となります。第4文冒頭の I was convinced that ~ は、もっと簡潔に I guessed that ~ のほうが良いでしょう。同じく第4文末の silence は absence のほうが良いです。第7文の pass on such a simple course はちょっと凝りすぎで、単に go だけで充分でしょう。そして今日最も注目してほしいのは第7文末の imaged です。ここは imagined でなければなりません。image は名詞、imagine が動詞です。

S先生：I'll tell you what's what.「事の真相を教えよう」という言い方があります。ここでの what is what between men and women は「男女の間では何が何なのか」つまり「男女の本当の機微」というような意味になります。
