帚木182・183：(式部の言葉続き)まいて君だちの御ため、はかばかしくしたたかなる御うしろみは、なににかせさせ給はむ。はかなし、くちをし、と、かつ見つつも、ただ我が心につき、宿世のひくかた侍るめれば、をのこしもなむ仔細なきものは侍るめる」と申せば、残りを言はせむとて、(中将)「さてさてをかしかりける女かな」と、すかい給ふを、心は得ながら、鼻のわたりをこづきて語りなす。
ましてや皆様方のような上のほうの君には、ここまで秀才でしっかりした世話女房などなんのお役に立ちましょうや。私などは、こんな奴はつまらぬ、どうしようもない、とは思っていながら、しかしなんとなく気に入っているところもあって、もしかしたら宿世の縁があるかもしれない、などと思えるふしもあったので、縁を切れずにおりました。まあ、男なんてものは他愛もないものですなあ」と、式部が話の途中で口を濁そうとするので、中将はその顛末を聞きたがって「さてさて妙な女だねえ、それは」とそそのかすと、式部はそそのかされていることは承知ながら、やや得意の鼻をうごめかしながらその先を語り継いだ。
N君：中将ならずとも、式部の語る物知り女が最終的にどうなったか、気になりますね。式部が得意げに語った内容に興味が湧きます。

S先生：今日はあまり出来がよくないです。大小いろいろ指摘があります。第1文の前半に出てきた unuseful はいけません。unused という形容詞は存在しますが unuseful という形容詞は存在しません。ここは She doesn't seem helpful to ~ とするのが良いでしょう。同じく第1文後半の because節は、英文としてどうこうということではなく、原文の文意とは違うと思います。N君はこういうところを突き詰め過ぎて、まるで数学の証明のように英文を作る癖があり、その結果できた英文が硬くなってしまいます。私の作文のようにサラッと流していくことも時には必要です。第2文では somewhat の後の不定冠詞はなくてもよいです。第4文は副詞Deeply を文頭に出して強調してきましたね。悪くはないですがちょっと肩に力が入りすぎている感じがします。I cannot but think how simple a man is. くらいでもよいと思いました。同じく第4文後半部の分子構文ですが、ここは思い切って said Shikibu. で一旦切って、He seemed to mean to ~ とする方がよいと思います。それから confessing はもっと一般的な telling を使うほうがよいでしょう。さらに第6文の fell＋O＋O が今日最大の問題点です。はじめのOを名詞として、「あとのOは原形不定詞・現在分詞・過去分詞ならOKだが名詞はダメ」です。つまり、I felt my interest rising. とか I felt myself torn apart. とかの形はOKですが、N君の作文のような fell＋名詞＋名詞 の形はありません。ここは Though knowing that he was tempted to do so, くらいでどうでしょうか。これに続く主節部分は、ちょっと凝りすぎの感がありますが、なかなか工夫された表現だと思います。

N君：知らなかった単語を調べておきます。第2文の have a liking for ~「～が好き」は見慣れませんが、辞書には He has a liking for playing seesaw.「シーソー遊びが好き」などの言い方が載っていました。第7文の coax は「人を優しく説得して～させる」の意で、She coaxed her son into taking his medicine.「子供をあやして薬を飲ませた」が出ていました。
