桐壺54：(命婦)「『まゐりてはいとど心苦しう心ぎもも尽くるやうになむ』と、内侍のすけの奏し給ひしを、もの思う給へ知らぬ心地にも、げにこそいとしのびがたう侍りけれ」とて、ややためらひて仰せごと伝え聞こゆ。
「内侍が『お訪ねいたしましたらそれはおいたわしいご様子で見も心も張り裂けるようでした』と帝に奏上しておりましたが、こうしてお伺いしてみますと、私のような道理を存じあげない者にとってもたいそう悲しく耐え難いことでございます」と命婦は言って、しばし心を落ち着けてから帝からの伝言を桐壺更衣の母君へ伝えた。
