命婦は今しがた見聞きしてきた感慨深いことどもをそっと帝に申し上げた。
N君：Myoubu told the Emperor politely what she had seen and listened at the residence of Kiritsubo's mother a few hours before.
S先生：Myoubu quietly told about the impressive things she had seen and heard.
どこで見聞きしたのか、それを誰に話したのか、ということについてはこれまで散々出てきてもうわかっているので私の作文では省略しました。
今日は早めに終わったのでいつものように英作談義をひとつ入れましょう。テーマは「2人の時3人以上の時問題」で、これまでも少し触れましたがここでまとめておきましょう。
〇 2人の時： There were two students, one Japanese and the other Chinese.
〇 3つ以上の時 : To know English is one thing ; to speak it is quite another. 知る、話す、聞く、読む、などいろいろありますからね。
〇 他のもの全て : One remained and the others went out. このように定冠詞には残ったほうのすべて、という含意があり、このことは2人の時にも成り立ちます。
〇 前者と後者 : Dilligence and idleness are opposite to each other. The one leads to success and the other to failure. この場合 the one = the former, the other = the latter となります。ちなみに dilligence「勤勉」で dilligent ≒ industrious
