古文研究法131-1 紫式部日記より：秋の気配立つままに、土御門殿(つちみかどどの)の有様(ありさま)言はむかたなくをかし。池のわたりの梢(こづえ)ども、遣水(やりみず)のほとりの草むら、おのがじし色付きわたりつつ、おほかたの空も艶(えん)なるにもてはやされて、不断の御読経の声々あはれに勝りけり。やうやう涼しき風の景色にも、例の絶えせぬ水の音なひ、夜もすがら聞き違(まが)はさる。
秋の様子になるにつれ道長様の邸宅の有様は言いようもなく趣深い。池の周辺の木々の枝や、引き込んでいる水の辺の草むらは、めいめいにずっと色付いており、空全体もほのぼのと魅力的なのに引き立てられて、休みなく続くお経の声がますます心に沁みる。だんだん涼しくなる風の具合にも、いつもの通りの絶え間ない水音が、読経と入り混じって夜っぴいて区別なく聞こえる。
N君：「趣深い庭の様子を長々と描写した記述」というジャンルがあるの？ というくらいに、平安時代の女流作家の話にはこの手の描写がよく出てきます。話の筋、という意味では何ということもない記述なのですが、結構大切な単語も出て来るので注意が必要だと思います。「土御門殿」は人名ではなくて「藤原道長様の邸宅」の意。副詞「おのがじし」は大切で「おのおの、めいめい」の意味であり英語では with each other くらいでしょう。「おほかたの空」は「空全体」です。「やうやう」は枕草子初段に出て来る「やうやう白うなりゆく山際(やまぎは)」でも有名で、「だんだん」の意味です。「不断の御読経」は、安産祈願のために2時間交代で24時間体制でやるお経で、坊さんたちも大変ですね。「夜もすがら聞き違はさる」は、「AとBの音が入り混じって区別が付かない」と言っており、A＝読経の声、B＝遣水の水音、という構成になっています。
The more advanced autumn was, the more tasteful the view was in the garden of Lord Michinaga's villa. The branches of the trees around the pond and a clump of grass around the artificial stream turned red, yellow, and brown, respectively. Inspired by the attractively colored sky in all directions, I was touched by the voice of sutra recited incessantly somewhere in the villa. I could hear the constant sound of water streaming down in the cold wind. The water sound and the recitation voice , mixed together, reached me all night long, and created a suggestively aesthetic world. I was unable to discriminate one from another.
S先生：まず気になったのは「N君の作文は過去形で書かれている」ということです。過去時制で書くことは間違いではないですが、この場合は現在時制で書くほうがリアルな感じが出ると思います。したがって私は現在形で書きました。第5文の主部 The water sound and the recitation voice には日本人的発想が凝縮しています。欧米人に通じるでしょうが、The sound of water and the voice of recitation のほうが英語らしいでしょう。第6文述部の discriminate one from another がいけません。ここでは「読経と水音」という二者を区別する、という場面なのですから、one from the other とすべきです。another は、三者以上の比較対象が存在する場合に使われます。I don't like this tie ; show me another. のように使います。もしもここに the other が使われたらネクタイが2本しかないことになります。何でもないような所ですが、こういう所に「英語が分かっているかどうか」が如実に表れるし、採点者も注目しているので、生徒としては充分気を付けたいですね。
As autumn is coming nearer, the garden of Lord Michinaga's mansion looks more and more tasteful beyond description. The brances of the trees around the pond and the thick grass along the artificial stream are getting red and yellow this year as usual. The whole sky is calm and fascinating. The sutra continuously read by someone is deeply impressive. The wind is getting cooler and cooler. Mingled with the voice of sutra recitation, the constant flow of water has a indistinctive sound all through the night.
