帚木259・260・261：(紀伊守)「不意にかくてものし侍るなり。世の中といふもの、さのみこそ、今も昔も定まりたる事侍らね。なかにつけても女の宿世は浮かびたるなむあはれに侍る」など聞こえさす。
「なにさま、思いもかけずこういうことになりました次第でございまして。男女の仲というものはこんなものでございましょう。今も昔も先の定まったことではありませんからね。中でも女の運命というものは本当に不確かなもので、気の毒なところもございますなあ」と紀伊守は述懐した。
N君：現代日本に生きる我々の感覚は、千年前の光源氏の頃の感覚と通じる所があるのですね。「伝統」というものの片鱗を見るような気がします。

S先生：だいたいよいのですが、第3文の foresee it both in the ancient times and in these days というくだりに違和感があります。まず、通例 these days はこのまま副詞句として使われるので in を付けた形が不自然です。これとは異なり、those days には in を付けて in those days として使うのが面白い所。次に、全体としてやはり表現が硬い。私なら、foresee their future, at present or in the past という具合に、カンマで一旦区切って一息いれたいです。
”It happened by accident. This is the way the relations between man and woman are. No one can foresee his or her future, whether at present or in the past. Above all, nothing is more uncertain than women's destiny. They are really to be pitied," said Kii-no-kami with deep feelings.
今日は早く終わったので relation という単語について英作談義をしてみましょう。大修館の辞書から例文を見ていきます。単数の relation は物・事の「関係」を示しており、There is no relation between crime and poverty. とか、The pulse has a close relation to health. のように言います。一方、複数の relations は人や団体の「関係」を指すことが多く、Both countries established full deplomatic relations. のように使います。したがって今回の作文に現れた「男女関係」では relations を使うべきであり、N君はこの点をクリアしていたと思われます。relationship という単語を使えばこのような区別は不要となるようです。
N君：relation, relations, relationship についてはこれまで考えたことがありませんでした。今回の作文で relations を使って正解だったわけですが、これは全くの偶然で、今後は意識しておくべきですね。どこに地雷が埋まっているか分かりませんね。

S先生：第392回で言いましたがもう一度言います。the way を how に変えても良いですが the way how としてはいけません。the way の後に that を置いてもよいです。文末の are は完全自動詞で「在る、存在する」の意ですから、全体としては「これこそが男女関係のありようだ」となります。
