帚木135：(左馬頭の言葉続き)神無月の頃ほひ、月おもしろかりし夜、うちよりまかで侍るに、ある上人(うへひと)きあひて、この車に合ひ乗りて侍れば、大納言の家にまかりとまらむとするに、この人言ふやう、(この殿上人)『こよひ人待つらむ宿なむ、あやしく心苦しき』とて、この女の家、はたよきぬ道なりければ、荒れたるくづれより、池の水、影見えて、月だに宿るすみかを、過ぎむもさすがにて、降り侍りぬかし。
十月頃のことです。月の美しい夜でしたが、私が内裏の勤め先から退出しようとすると、さる殿上人と同道することとなりました。で、私の車に乗せてあげたのですが、私が実家の大納言家まで帰ろうとすると、この人が言うには『今夜は実はちょっと私を待ちかねている人がありましてな。どうも、なんだか気になって胸騒ぎがするで、、、』というわけです。この女の家は、大納言家まで行く道々で、どうもそこを通ることが避けられません。で、荒れて崩れた築地塀のところから見ると、池の水に月が映っている。ああして月影も宿る住み家だというのに、素通りするのもどうかと思ったので、私もそこで車を降りてみたのです。

Just after I left the office, I came across a certain aristocrat and resulted in going home in company with him. I let him ride on my ox carriage. On the way back to my parent's house, the Dainagon's, he began to murmur with some embarrassment, 'Tonight I feel a little anxious about a lady who is waiting for me.' While I indicated my understanding to his request, I was also inclined to visit my sweetheart. Since her house was just on my way home, I could not help passing through her house. After releasing him, I also changed my first schedule to get off the carriage. Peeking through the broken fence at the garden of her house, I found that the surface of the pond reflected the tasteful figure of the moon. I felt it insensible to pass through without visiting her lovely house which even the moon wanted to drop in.
S先生：第2文は An evening moonlight was beautiful. というふうに短くすることもできます。第6文「途中で降ろしてくれという彼の頼みに、ええいいですよ、と答えていたら、私もなんだか愛人の家に行きたくなった」ですが、これは原文にはない解釈です。なるほど、そういうことだったのかと、感心しました。友人が牛車を降りて女の所へ行こうとする時に、いくら興味があってもそのあとをノコノコ付いていくのは無粋ですからね。第9文後半の I found+that節 ですが少し硬い気がします。I found the moon shining itself on the surface of the pond. くらいでどうでしょうか。硬く重い、から、少しでも柔らかく軽い、に変えていくことを考えましょう。第10文の insensible は「人を主語とする形容詞」で、物や事に対して使われることはありません。たとえば、She was insensible to what she had said.「自身の発言に無頓着」とか、He is insensible of his position.「気付いていない」のように使います。したがって原文の I felt it insensible to do ～ は不適切であって、I felt it unwise to do ～ くらいでどうでしょうか。第10文末の drop in 「立ち寄る」ですが、このままでは自動詞なので、「どこどこへ立ち寄る」にするためには drop in at ～ にしなければなりません。「月も立ち寄る彼女の家」と言いたいのですから、her lovely house which even the moon wanted to drop in at. とするのが良いでしょう。
It was one bright moonlit night in October. When I was leaving the office, I happened to meet an officer of my rank, letting him ride on my carriage. I started for Dainagon's, my father's, when he said, 'To tell the truth, I have a lady waiting for me tonight. I don't know why, but I just feel uneasy about her.' I could not avoid passing through the lady's house on my way to my father's. Through the gap of a broken mud wall, I could see the moon shining on a pond. I thought it a pity not to drop in at her house where the moon was shining itself clearly, and so I got off the carriage changing my first plan.
N君：「左馬頭が友人を降ろしたあとに、自分も愛人の顔を見たくなって、愛人宅へ行った」という構成なのか、それとも、「友人を降ろして、見ていたら月も美しいし、ちょっと自分も降りて見て、友人の愛人の家の周辺を散策したくなった」という構成なのか、いまのところ不明なのですが、今後の展開で明らかになっていくでしょう。僕の感覚では、前者ならわかるのですが、後者は無粋だと思います。
