帚木39・40：(左馬頭)「もとのしな、ときよのおぼえうちあひ、やむごとなきあたりの、うちうちのもてなしけはひおくれたらむはさらに言はず、なにをしてかくおひ出でけむと、言ふかひなくおぼゆべし。うちあひてすぐれたらむもことわり、これこそはさるべき事とおぼへて、めづらかなることと心も驚くまじ。
左馬頭はなおも弁じたてる。「いえね、もともとのお家柄も申し分なし、また時流に乗って声望も充分、それで世間では高貴な家と見られているような人の娘であるにもかかわらず、実際の様子や振る舞いが今一つというようなのは、事新しく言うまでもないことですが、いったい何がどうなってこんな娘が出来たものだろうと、ほんとガッカリさせられますね。といってまた家柄もすばらしく、それ相応に娘も素晴らしいとくると、これは当たり前、全くの当然と思われますから、別段珍しくもなくて特に心も踊りますまい。

S先生：第2文で「関係代名詞の二重限定」が出ました。第285回の解説を読んで早速使ってきましたね。第3文の take it for granted that ～ 「～を保障されたものとしてとらえる、～を当り前だと思う」は重要な言い方であり、ここでも上手に使うことができました。第5文の on earth は「いったいぜんたい」くらいの意味であり、疑問詞Why を強調しています。第7文の be prone to do 「～しがちで、～の傾向があって」はなにか好ましくないことをする傾向がある時に使われる言い方で、ここでは好適でした。辞書の例文には He is prone to catch cold even in summer.「夏でも風邪をひきやすい」が出ていました。この後に続く think it natural that ～ はニュアンスこそ違え、さっきの take it for granted that ～ に似ていますね。that以下をいったん it で言い換えているこの感じを味わって下さい。今回は全体的に上出来だったと思います。

This is not particularly uncommon, but you cannot but be disappointed to see such a lady. Who on earth has brought her up so indecently ? At the same time, there is a lady who conducts herself elegantly. You take for granted her decent manners. You are not impressed by her refinement in particular.
N君：第1文の on は「動作が続いている」ことを示していると思います。第2文の behave oneself+副詞 と、第5文の conduct oneself+副詞 は構造が似ています。第288回に他動詞としての behave を勉強しましたが、conduct は意味も似ていますし同様に考えてよいと思いました。
