見れば、まったくこの世の人とは思えぬくらい美しく、また立派におとなびているので、帝はかえって不吉だとさえ感じられる。美しすぎる子は悪霊に魅入られて夭折するかもしれぬと信じられていたからである。
N君：前回から引き続いてここは若宮についての記述ですが、突然、帝が主語の「いとゆゆしうおぼしたり」が出現していて、現代の感覚からかけ離れていますよね。なぜ主語を省略してしまうのか？ 永遠のテーマです。
He grew up into a fine and brilliant boy to the extent that people could not regard him as an ordinary person in this world. Seeing him, the Emperor felt his beauty all the more ominous because of the superstition that an excessively fine child might die young by the grudge of devils.
S先生：今回は全体的に良く出来ています。第1文の into は必要で、さなぎが蝶へ変化したような感じが出ています。to the extent that はたしかに難しい言い方ですが、結局 so(such)～that ～ の構文と思えばよいわけで、ここも such a fine and brilliant boy that people could not ~ と考えれば良いのです。第2文の all the more ominous も感じが出ています。「これこれの迷信があるがゆえにかえってより不吉」の意です。美少年で あることは良い事なのだがそれがかえって悪い、と言っているわけですね。最後のdie young は「若くして死ぬ」で、live long などと同じ言い方ですね。
Seeing that he had grown up into an ethereally beautiful boy as if he were an adult, the Emperor had a premonition that something unlucky might happen, for it was believed, in those days, that too beautiful a boy would die young, possesed by an evil spirit.
N君：ethereal「この世のものと思えないくらいに素晴らしい、霊妙な」≒ exquisite。premonition「悪い予感、虫の知らせ」。too beautiful a boy は語順注意ですね。最後のところの possesed by は obsessed by とだいたい同じで「とりつかれて、憑依されて」のような意味ですね。知らないことが次々と出てくるので、整理しきれません。
