命婦は故桐壺更衣の里に着いて、門内に牛車を引き入れてあたりを見渡すと、なんともあわれを誘う邸内の様子だった。
N君：Myoubu reached the private house of the late Kiritsubo. Pulling her vehicle into the gate and looking around the villla, she found a pitiful air of the garden and the house.
S先生：pitiful「哀れみを誘うような、不憫な」であって、今回の場合はそういう意味なのかそれとも elegant, tasteful, attractive のような意味なのか難しいところですね。of でもよいのですが、せっかく find を使ったので SVOC の形にして she found a pitiful air hanging over the garden and the house のようにすると「漂っている感じ」が出ると思いました。
Myoubu arrived at Dainagon's residence where Kiritsubo was born. Her carriage was drawn through the gate. She felt lonely to see the bleakness all around the place.
今回も少し英作談義をしましょう。前回 music concerts used to be held (過去の常習的習慣) が出て来たのでちょっと注意をしておきたくなりました。基本的なことながら、used to do と be used to+名詞 の違いについて確認しておきます。始めの to は不定詞の to ですが、後の to は前置詞の to であることを意識してください。She used to go to the museum on Sundays.「行ったものだ」と、He is used to sitting up late at night. = He is accustomed to sitting up late at night.「慣れている」との違いに注意。
N君：bleak「荒涼とした、わびしい」は dreary に似ています。
