桐壺16：まうのぼり給ふにも、あまりうちしきる折々は、打ち橋渡殿のここかしこの道にあやしきわざをしつつ、御送り迎えの人のきぬの裾たへがたく、まさなき事もあり。
また反対に、帝のお召しに応じて桐壺更衣のほうから参上することもあり、それがあまりに頻繁になると、掛け橋や渡り廊下のあちこちにとんでもない汚物がまき散らされていたりして、桐壺更衣を送り迎えする女房たちの着物の裾が耐え難い悪臭にまみれる、というような始末に負えないことがあった。
Reversely, there were opportunities that Kiritsubo went to the Emperor's room in response to His invitation. But when such invitations were too frequent, those who envied the unequal treatment resorted to excessive measures. For example, they deliberately put smelly waste here and there on the board bridges or corridors which the ladies waiting on Kiritsubo to and from the Emperor's room had to pass through. It was a mess that sleeves of their clothes got soiled with the waste !
S先生：第2文の resoyt to は「なにか過激な手段に訴える」の意です。N君はこれが好きですね、以前もどこかで使ってました。deliberate は「思慮深い」のような良い意味と、「意図的な、故意の」のような悪い意味をもっていて、ここでは悪いほうですね。第3文の関係代名詞 which を一瞬 where にしたくなるかもしれないが文末に ある pass through の目的語になるわけだからここは which でOKです。第4文の It was a mess that ~ はあまり見たことがない。「もう滅茶苦茶だ」という気持ちはわかるが、To their embarrassment, the sleves ~ くらいでどうですか。
By and by Kiritsubo was obliged to visit Him, obeying His calling, and when she came to frequent His bedroom, those jealous ladies scattered excrement all over the places, bridges and corridors, which she had to pass. So the hems of the lower ladies who attended on her were often soiled with the feces stinking unbearably.
