桐壺96：太液の芙蓉、未央の柳も、げにかよひたりしかたちを、からめいたるよそほひはうるはしうこそありけめ、なつかしうらうたげなりしをおぼしいづるに、はなとりの色にも音にも、よそふべきかたぞなき。
太液池のほとりの芙蓉の花のように美しい顔(かん)ばせ、未央宮の庭の柳のようなほっそりとしたしなやかな体つき、そういう楊貴妃の姿そのままに唐らしい装束もうるわしく描いてはいるのだが、それを見ても帝の心には、桐壺のあの人懐こい、そしていかにも可愛らしかった様子が浮かんでくるばかりで、それはどんなに美麗な花や鳥を引き合いに出そうとも、とうていあの桐壺の魅力にはたとえようもない。
